Year One

Dear Year One Community,
Just like that, there is only one week to go until the end of Term. What a busy term it has been. Our Swimming Program was a great success, we would like to congratulate the students on their principled behaviour and they way they represented Saltwater College.
Reading
In Reading, students are engaging with non-fiction texts and learning to identify key features such as headings, photographs, captions, diagrams, and tables of contents. These features help them organise information and locate facts more easily, while also supporting their understanding of different topics. Students are developing confidence as readers and enjoying the chance to discover new information through non-fiction texts. Students have also been revisiting the author’s purpose, using the idea of PIE – to Persuade, Inform or Entertain – to help them think more deeply about why texts are written.
Writing
In Writing, we have been exploring persuasive texts. Students have learned about what 'persuade' means and what an 'opinion' is. We then had a go at coming up with 'reasons' to support our 'opinions' about different topic, Which is the best pet? Students were challenged create a 'Wanted' poster explaining why their choice of pet is best.
Maths
In Mathematics, Year One students are learning about multiplication by thinking of it as making equal groups. They are using hands-on materials to make and count groups, such as “3 groups of 2” or “5 groups of 4.” This helps students see how repeated addition connects to multiplication and builds their understanding of number patterns. Students are beginning to apply this knowledge with growing confidence as they talk about and represent multiplication in different ways.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we have just started our next unit, Sharing the Planet. The Central Idea of this unit is 'Living things adapt to their environment' and it is based on how animals adapt to be able to survive in the environment they live in. Students participated in provocation activities by unpacking the Central Idea, defining key words and exploring living and non living things. They also watched engaging videos about animal adaptations and wrote their wonderings, which they will research throughout the unit.
