Prep

Dear Prep families,

Although Term 3 has been a shorter term, we have certainly managed to pack a lot into the nine weeks! Recently, we enjoyed visiting the Book Fair and Father’s Day Stalls as a whole class. The Preps were very thoughtful when selecting gifts for their special person and choosing a book to enjoy at home with their families. We also participated in the whole-school initiative Yellow Day, helping to raise money for cancer research, a wonderful opportunity for our students to contribute to a meaningful cause.

Reading

In Reading, we have been exploring non-fiction texts, learning about their features and discussing when and how to best use them. We have also been working with onset and rime patterns to strengthen both our reading and writing skills.

To build comprehension, students have been practising asking and answering questions about what they read. A key focus has been visualising, using imagination to create a picture in our minds and drawing on our five senses to bring the text to life.

Our Preps have thoroughly enjoyed the new books gifted to our classrooms for read-aloud sessions. These shared experiences allow students to become familiar with the structures and events in texts, and it has been wonderful to hear them join in with growing confidence. We are especially grateful to our 'book fairies' for providing extra copies so students can also enjoy these books during independent reading time.

Writing

In Writing, our Preps have continued to create recounts of past experiences, carefully including the 5Ws (who, what, when, where and why) to make their writing more detailed and interesting.

Students have also used EPIC and classroom texts to research and write information reports on animals of their choice. They are developing the important skill of revising and editing to add detail to their sentences whilst also checking for conventions (capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and appropriate end punctuation) —a big step in developing independence as young authors.

A highlight this term has been our class innovations. We innovated on the text. 'The Important Book', which we turned into, 'The Important Thing About My Dad'. It was such a joy to share these pieces aloud as a class.

Phonics

Our students continue to participate in daily Phonics sessions, where they are identifying rhyming words, exploring alliteration (words beginning with the same sound), and orally counting phonemes before attempting to read and spell independently on their whiteboards.

This term, we have focused on the digraphs ch, sh, and ng, practising how to read and spell words containing these sounds. It has been wonderful to see our Preps displaying confidence and risk-taking behaviours as they attempt to write modelled sentences on their own.

Maths

In Mathematics, our Preps have been learning about ordinal numbers, saying them in order and identifying which object is first, second, third, and so on in a sequence. They have also been using the vocabulary last, before, and after to describe positions. Students have practised these skills in a variety of ways, including sequencing objects, lining up themselves, ordering cards, and playing cooperative games.

Teachers also carried out assessments through Essential Assessment to guide our planning and support the children's learning in Measurement. Following this, students explored measurement concepts by using classroom objects and manipulatives to compare and identify which items were longer, shorter, or the same length.

Lats Day of Term 3

Don’t forget that our last day of Term 3 is Friday, the 19th, with early dismissal at 2:30 pm

To celebrate the end of a wonderful term, we will also be having Prep Pyjama Day! The children are invited to come to school in their comfiest pyjamas or cosy clothing. Please remember that appropriate school footwear will still need to be worn.

We hope everyone has a fantastic term break, and we can’t wait to hear about all the exciting adventures when we return for Term 4—our very last term of Prep! Rest up, it’s going to be a busy and exciting one.

Reminders:

  • Hats- A reminder that hats need to be worn from next term.
