From the 5/6 Classrooms

Start Up
By Deborah, 6SC, and Ivy and Laani, 6PW
We kick started Term 4 on the 5th of October, feeling excited about the term ahead. During the first week of term, we re-visited our whole school rights, responsibilities and values to help set the tone and expectations for the term ahead. We also re-visited the 6 learning assets, which are:
- Thinkers
- Inquirers
- Self Managers
- Researches
- Communicators
- Collaborators
We completed an eSafety unit, exploring how to communicate safely online and what to do when someone communicates with us online in a way that is inappropriate or makes us feel uncomfortable.
Integrated Studies
By Matilda and Miss B, 6SB
The whole school concept for Term 4 is Creativity. In Grade 5/6, our unit is titled Bizarre Bazaar, and explores the following essential questions:
- How can we design and make a product that will appeal to our consumers?
- How are different resources used in economics?
- How does marketing influence consumer choices?
During this unit, we will be exploring the design and production process and the different resources and sales tactics used to create and market products. We will brainstorm an idea for a product and conduct market research to refine it. We will work in groups to prototype and produce a product that will be sold at a school community market called 'Bizarre Bazaar'. The proceeds from the market will be donated to a charity.
Literacy Overview
By Zavier, Micah and Jayden, 6SC
At the start of the term, we were introduced to a picture book - The Red Tree by Shaun Tan. We explored the question “What is a picture book and what makes a picture book good?” Looking at just the front and back cover, we made predictions, discussing:
- What do we think the book is about?
- What do we think the title The Red Tree might symbolise?
- Who do we think the main character might be, and what could happen to them?
- How does the cover make us feel? Why?
- Based on what we know about Shaun Tan’s style, what kind of story do we expect this to be - happy, sad, hopeful, strange?
Moving forward, we are going to use this text to explore plot, symbolism, setting, character and theme. We will examine and respond to text and image, and explore the poetic elements of the book.
Alongside this unit of work, we will also be writing our own Narrative.
Numeracy Overview
By Daniel. S, Daniel. C and Aaron, 6SB
This term, both Grade 5 and 6 students will be exploring fractions, decimals and percentages. This correlates with the Financial Maths element of our Bizarre Bazaar Integrated unit. Grade 6 students will also be exploring units of measurement, volume and capacity, and location and transformation. Grade 5 students will also explore data and statistics, angles and operations.
