From the 3/4 Classrooms

What a fantastic start we've had to the term in the Grade 3/4 classrooms! The students have returned with great enthusiasm and have already engaged in a wide range of meaningful and exciting learning experiences. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been working on so far:
Start Up Program:
Learning Assets:
We began the term by revisiting our Learning Assets - Researcher, Communicator, Collaborator, Self-Manager, and Thinker. These skills form the foundation of how we learn and work together in the classroom. To bring these assets to life, students completed a Passion Project. Each student and their partner chose a topic they were passionate about or curious to learn more about. They conducted independent research, carefully considering reliable sources, and then worked with their Passion Project Partner to plan and present their findings. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the learning assets in action!
At the end of the project, students reflected on which learning assets they used most effectively and identified one they’d like to strengthen throughout the term.
Rights, Responsibilities and Our School Values:
We also took time to revisit our school rights and responsibilities (the right to feel safe, the right to learn, and the right to feel respected). Through classroom discussions and scenarios, students developed a deeper understanding of how these rights shape our learning environment.
In addition, we explored our school values: Respect, Care, Inclusion, and Responsibility. Students reflected on what these values look like in everyday actions and set personal goals for how they can demonstrate them this term.
Mathematics
In Maths, we’ve been consolidating our understanding of fractions and decimals. Students enjoyed engaging with the Fraction Wall Game, which helped them visualise and compare different fractions. This was also sent home as a fun learning task to play with family!
We’ve also introduced decimats as a hands-on way to explore and represent decimals. This week, we kicked off Daily Decimal Practice, where students have been exploring a new decimal each day, identifying its place value and answering questions to deepen their understanding.
We’ve begun exploring probability. As part of our learning, students conducted a fun chance experiment to test the playful theory:
"If you whisper 'Roll me a six!' to the dice before rolling it, you have a higher chance of getting a six."
This experiment sparked great discussion around chance, fairness, and the difference between beliefs and statistical outcomes. It was a light-hearted and engaging way to deepen students’ understanding of how probability works in real-life scenarios.
English
This term, our focus in English is on narrative reading and writing. We’ve begun exploring our mentor text, Brindabella, analysing the first chapter to unpack the author's use of word choice and descriptive language. This has inspired students to carefully consider their own language choices when creating setting descriptions for their own narratives.
We are incredibly proud of the way students have started the term with curiosity, creativity, and a strong sense of community. We look forward to sharing more of their learning with you as the term progresses!
