The Power of Reading
At SJV, we believe reading is one of the most powerful skills children can develop. It opens the door to new ideas, sparks imagination, and builds the vocabulary and comprehension needed for success in every subject. When children read regularly, they become more confident learners and lifelong lovers of stories and knowledge.
Families play an essential role in fostering this love of reading. The most meaningful moments often happen outside the classroom – when books, stories and conversations are shared at home.
Here are a few simple ways to support your child’s reading journey:
- Read together – share a bedtime story, take turns reading aloud, or enjoy picture books and novels as a family.
- Talk about stories – ask questions about what might happen next, how a character is feeling, or what your child would do in the same situation.
- Model reading – let your child see you reading books, newspapers or magazines.
- Visit the library – explore different genres and let your child choose books that capture their interests.
Everyday reading – encourage your child to read recipes, signs, menus or instructions to see how reading connects to daily life.
When children see reading as enjoyable, they are more likely to develop positive habits that last a lifetime. Even small moments – like asking “What book should we read tonight?” – show your child that reading is valued and fun.
Together, as a community, we can help our children discover the joy of reading and give them the tools to succeed at school and beyond. Thank you for the wonderful role you play in their learning journey.
