Science at BPS
Term 3, Week 8
What an incredibly busy term full of scientific activity! We have experimented our hearts out with a focus on chemical sciences and seeing how reversible and irreversible changes might occur in different substances and whether they are classified as liquids, solids or gases.
We've even managed to tie in some taste-testing of some of our results - not always with the outcome we thought! We have investigated the properties of materials in and around our school and looked at natural and processed variations of materials. So much incredible discussion and thinking has been happening.
Science day at BPS was a highlight for many this term. It was so exciting to see the fun that students had dressing up and celebrating various scientists and scientific fields of endeavour. Our incursion was loud and informative - based on Cosmic chemistry concepts. There was fire and ice and all things in between.
Students also participated in class based experiments on the day, which sparked curiosity and some excellent learning conversations. Our Science captains, Kaori and Jessie also ran a fun assembly where we shared our costumes and tested our thinking with the captain's quiz.
A wonderful celebration of science was had!
Our BPS weather station has also been a great point of discussion in classes, with some budding meteorologists keeping a keen eye on the data it updates us with during the day.
Our grade 6 students were able to visit the STEM centre at Blackburn High recently, participating in a series of experiments led by some of the year 9 HAP students (including the well known 'elephant's toothpaste') This is the continuation of a valuable ongoing partnership with our local high school, with our grade 5 students planning a visit next term.
And as if there hasn't been enough fun in science, recent lessons have involved a focus on microbes and how some are transferred by people. This week we had a visit from Jen Payne, a CSIRO microbiologist who has been partnering with Mrs. Stansfield this year. Jen worked with a couple of classes on a Glitterbug microbe transfer experiment, which all classes will have the opportunity to try in coming lessons.
Please enjoy a selection of photos from throughout the term, and as always - Stay Curious!
