Review of Term 3

Here’s a brief look at what our amazing students have achieved this term:

Foundation - Grade 6

A few weeks ago, Spotify recommended the award-winning Australian country artist Tom Curtain to me. Spotify knows my music taste well, so I clicked on Tom’s latest album ‘Here’s to You’ and soon found that I had listened to the complete album without skipping a track. Tom’s stories are told beautifully through song and the one that resonated with me most is ‘Be Kind’, so much so, that I had to share the video with our students. It embodies everything we value at BPS – and what we value as teachers and parents. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Foundation

Foundation, Grades 1 and 2

Over a couple of lessons we explored NAIDOC Week, connection to Country and the importance of language and sharing culture within our communities. Students learnt about the yidaki (didgeridoo), and participated in dances moving their bodies like emus, kangaroos and echidnas.

To coincide with our theme ‘Music from the 1970’s’, we followed along with the picture book ‘Peace Train’ while listening to the song by Cat Stevens. We discussed the song then sang it while playing percussion instruments.

Grades 3 and 4

Student's Name Compositions

The culmination of Term 3 sees students writing a musical composition using the letters in their names. To get to this stage of independent composition, we focused on rhythm development and recognition of treble clef note names. Students also transferred their composition onto their iPads using Song Maker from the website Chrome Music Lab.

Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6

Focus on cultural identity, wellbeing and connection to country.

Students enjoyed singing and dancing to ‘Our Country, Our Life’ by Koori Mob.

We had great discussions about the song’s purpose—sharing pride, resilience, and connection to land and identity.

Assembly Performance - Term 4 (Week 1) Friday 10th October

This term students have been rehearsing the Irish folk dance 'The Rakes of Mallow' which they will be performing with their Foundation Buddies at the first assembly of Term 4 - an event not to be missed!

Grade 6 students have also been working on their dance to *NSYNC's 'Bye, Bye, Bye' which they will also perform on Friday 10th October.

Grades 4-6 Choir

The Choir (and Mr Merlino and I!) are enjoying the challenge of learning the medley 'My Shot' from the Broadway musical 'Hamilton'. Students have been developing their understanding of score reading as well as learning to sing in two (and sometimes three) parts! Bravo!

The Choir will be performing at an assembly next term, before the Evening of Music.

Keep singing during the school holidays! he Choir Showbie folder has all audio and video resources needed.

F-3 Singing and Dancing Group

Grade 3 students Hailey and Poppy visited me earlier this term with the suggestion of a singing and dancing group for students in Foundation to Grade 3. They are to be commended on their organisation and foresight into what they would like to achieve. With the assistance of Sophia and our Music Captains, Amy and Olivia, they held a couple of trial sessions during Thursday lunchtimes.

Students keen to continue were accepted into the Showbie folder: 2025 F-3 Song & Dance Club 🎤🎶 If your child has not yet logged on, the code is HEEEH. The folder includes videos and audio tracks for students to practise with before next week’s assembly performance. For those without access to school iPads, here are the resources your child needs:

Assembly Performance

The F-3 Singing & Dancing Group will perform at next week’s assembly (Friday 19th September) at approximately 2.00pm (due to early term finish). We hope to see you there!

Bell Music Suggestions

Well, if there’s one thing each year level has in common at the moment, it’s their love (or dislike!) for the soundtrack to KPop Demon Hunters. Music teachers all around the world are experiencing this phenomenon. I received so many requests for these songs on Showbie, and it was great to hear our students singing along when they heard the songs at Bell Time.

Music & Band Captains

What a busy term it has been for our Music Captains, Amy and Olivia!

Movement Mondays, Band Performances and assisting Hailey and Poppy with their F-3 Singing and Dancing Group.

Amy and Olivia, you deserve a HUGE thank you for your enthusiasm and assistance this term!

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday!

Yours in harmony,
