Year Four

Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families & Friends.

Thankyou to all the fathers and special people that attended this morning.  We hope you have enjoyed the Proud Mary Dance, special cards and time spent with your students playing different games throughout our community.

The chickens will leave our community to go and live with Mrs Dourley on her farm, with all her other chickens to live happily ever after.  We have enjoyed all our learning about our chickens, and appreciate the support throughout our whole school, as they have watched the chickens live.

As we head into the last two weeks of term - we can hardly believe we are saying this - the students will be very busy completing work, undertaking progress assessments, being well prepared for our Melbourne Zoo excursion, and following this experience up with reflection activities.

Our Learning:

English:

This  week the students have been completing a persuasive letter independently to see how much they have learnt about writing structures over the term, and are presenting them to their classmates.

Next week, the students begin a literature study about the book Storm Boy. As the students read we will be focusing on reading with expression to promote fluency.

Mathematics:

This week,  the students learnt about converting between fraction and decimal notation for tenths, halves and quarters.  Next week, the students will focus on Decimals.  They will be partitioning (breaking up) numbers to two decimal places and writing the non-standard expanded forms, then applying numbers to two decimal places in financial contexts.

Integrated Studies:

The chickens remained our main focus this week. They have really grown - some quite tall, and there are no eggs in the incubator.  We were very fortunate that only one egg remained unhatched throughout this experience.  The students talked about the circle of life, as they understand not all eggs will hatch.

Over the next week, the excitement will build for our excursion to Melbourne Zoo next Friday.  Please ensure you have given permission for your student/s to attend, ensure the students arrive at school promptly to leave for the excursion, wear the required school clothing and bring water & food for the day.  All the details are on the excursion form on Pam/Simon everywhere.

Religion:

As the students continue their 'Fuel for the Journey' unit, we have completed our Rosary unit provided by the parish this week. We thank them for their time and all the learning we have received.

Next week students will learn about the Symbols, Rituals and Gestures involved in the Eucharist and make a booklet about the Mass.

Social Emotional Learning:

The students continue to learn about Positive Gender relationships.  Over the last week the students have started learning about being a consent detective.  This means that we learnt about personal space and body boundaries and what it can be like if other people do hurtful or bad things to our bodies, in an age appropriate manner. As the students continue to be consent detectives they will ensure that they understand what consent means.  Then they will discuss their understanding with age appropriate scenario's.

Auslan:

Over the last week the students have been practicing words related to family, this included the signs for Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister, Cousin, Half Brother, Step Sister.  Next week the students will undertake revision of the previous units, so that they can be assessed in the last week of term
