Year Two

Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

We've had a fantastic week, starting with an engaging Drama Toolbox incursion and ending on a high note with our Father’s Day celebration. A heartfelt thank you to all the amazing father figures and special people who joined us for the fun-filled day. It was wonderful to see how excited the students were to spend time playing games and sharing special moments with you. Your presence made the day even more meaningful, and we’re so grateful for your support.

This week we are learning about...

Religious Education: This week, students explored the different informal ways people pray. We began by talking about what prayer means to each of us and how people choose to pray in their own personal ways. Students learned that prayer can take many forms, including meditation, singing, dancing, drawing, and writing.

Mathematics: This week, students learned about identifying parallel sides in two-dimensional shapes. They practiced spotting parallel lines within various shapes. Through fun activities, students improved their understanding of shapes and how to spot parallel lines.

English: This week, students read the story What Do You Call Your Dad?, which celebrates fathers and the many different names people use for their dads around the world. Students reflected on the special things they love about their own dads and wrote heartfelt cards for their dad or another special person in their life.

AUSLAN: This week, students explored signs of thinking and demonstrated their learning through fun memory games.

Integrated Studies: This week, students took part in an engaging drama-based science incursion focused on healthy habits and body systems. They explored how the body works and learned about the importance of healthy eating, regular exercise, and good sleep. The session also helped students understand the difference between everyday foods and sometimes foods, while highlighting how all parts of the body work together to keep us healthy.

In the classroom, students explored how advertising can influence the food choices we make.

Social Emotional Learning: This week, students learned about consent. They discussed what it means to ask for, give, or say no to consent in everyday situations. Students also practiced using kind and respectful ways to ask for permission and respond to others.

Next week are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will learn continue to learn about prayer in preparation our upcoming Mass.

Mathematics: Students will continue learning about two-dimensional shapes.

English: Students will be completing writing activities using the text Lunch at 10 Pomegranate Street.

AUSLAN: Students will learn that deaf people use sign language to talk. They will practice signing how to close something and share their thoughts during a game.

Integrated Studies: Students will reflect on what they learned during our Body Investigators visit and how healthy eating helps different parts of their bodies stay strong and healthy

Social Emotional Learning: Students will learn about the parts of their bodies they need to keep private and how to notice if they feel unsafe in their bodies.
