Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

This week we welcomed fathers and father figures in to our community for a fun filled, dance packed Father's Day celebration.

Thanks for coming Dad's, we loved seeing you!

This week:

Literacy-During whole class Reading, we read the book 'Zog and the Flying Doctors' a  wonderful story about following our dreams and problem solving. We looked at how Fiction (made up stories) are different from Non-Fiction (factual books) and what features we can expect to see in both types of books.

Literacy-During Phonics, we looked at the gi, gy and ge sounds where the i,e and y change the sound of the g to a soft g sound as in gentle, gigantic or gym..

Mathematics: This week for Mathematics, we continued to learn about number patterns. An activity you can do at home is as follows. Generate 2, two-digit numbers (use dice or a stop watch). Students can calculate the difference between the two numbers, using tens and ones place value differences.

Integrated: This week we commenced work on the 'My Healthy Self' booklet, where students used the questionnaire and baby photos to reflect on what they have learnt about growing and changing. We will continue with the booklet till the end of term.

Religious Education: During Religion, we learnt about the sacrament of Eucharist which is fuel for our spiritual journey.

SEL: This week we learned how join in any type of game regardless of their gender and what being fair looks like when welcoming others to join our games.

AUSLAN: This week during AUSLAN we learned the following signs.

Next week

Literacy-Reading - Over the next 2 weeks we will be reading 'Dear you love from your brain'.

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to retell the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.
