Year Six

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

This week, Grade 6 students proudly represented St Thomas in the district inter-school sports competition, showing excellent teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. A special mention goes to the softball team, who made history by becoming thefirst teamfrom St Thomas to take first place. The hard work and dedication of all teams brought pride to the entire school community.

Thank you for all of our Dad's and Special People who were able to come and spend time with their children. We hope that you have a wonderful and restful day on Sunday to celebrate how special and inspirational you are to our students.

Religious Education Focus:

This week, students worked in pairs to begin researching one of the four main parts of the Liturgy of the Eucharist: the Offertory, Prayer over the Offerings, Eucharistic Prayer, or Communion Rite. Each pair will act out their section and explain its significance, helping the class understand the structure and meaning of the Eucharistic celebration.

English Focus:

Reading:

Students continued to learn about Latin base words with duce and duct, which mean “to lead” or “to draw.” They explored how these roots form words like conduct, produce, and introduce. Separately, students practiced using vocabulary from their class novel Once in their speaking and writing, helping them improve their language skills and deepen their understanding of the story.

Writing:

Students learnt about cohesive language devices that help make writing and speech clearer and more connected. They explored techniques like word associations, synonyms, antonyms, and repetition to link ideas smoothly and add emphasis. Through various activities and examples, students practiced using these devices to improve the flow and coherence of their writing, making their communication more effective and engaging.

Mathematics Focus:

This week, students learned how to convert between different units of measurement for length and mass. They practiced moving between millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres, as well as grams and kilograms, using place value knowledge and multiplication or division by powers of ten. Through hands on activities and real-world examples, students developed confidence in choosing appropriate units and accurately converting measurements.

Integrated Studies Focus:

Students continued learning about the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur for both boys and girls during puberty. They explored how these changes are a normal part of growing up and affect everyone differently. Discussions focused on developing a positive mindset, respecting personal boundaries, and understanding the importance of self-care and hygiene. The learning helped students feel more informed, confident, and respectful of themselves and others during this stage of development.

SEL Focus:

Students continued to explore facts and statistics related to gender equality, engaging in thoughtful discussions about the root causes of these inequalities. They examined social, economic, and cultural factors contributing to gender gaps and brainstormed possible solutions to promote fairness and inclusion. This deeper understanding encouraged critical thinking and empathy toward creating a more equal society.

Auslan Learning Focus:

Students learnt how to sign the names of different animals using Auslan. They also practiced how to ask others what animals they have and how to respond using full sentences. Students built their confidence in using these signs in conversations, helping them to communicate more effectively and respectfully in Auslan.
