Learning Pedagogy and Innovation

Mrs Laura Higgins- Director of Learning Pedagogy and Innovation

As Term Two comes to a close, we reflect on the significant progress and achievements made over the past eleven weeks. Each day has been a valuable opportunity for learning, growth, and development, and we are proud of all that our students and staff have accomplished.

I would like to formally acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our staff throughout Semester One. Their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to student success have been exemplary. In addition to our teaching staff, we extend our sincere thanks to our educational support and administrative teams, who are behind the scenes and whose contributions are essential in creating a supportive and effective learning environment.

Recently, our Year 10 and 11 students completed their mid-year examinations. These assessments provided a structured opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and apply their knowledge in a formal setting. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with students approaching the examinations with maturity and focus. While such assessments serve as important milestones, it is the ongoing process of classroom learning, reflection, and continuous improvement that underpins long-term academic success.

Formative Assessment

Providing Formative Assessment is one of the best ways for us to help students learn. It is a process in which both teachers and students collect information from the assessment and use it collaboratively to plan for future academic success. It looks at what students have learned, and haven’t learned, and gives us an idea of ‘where to from here’.

Researchers have found that good use of formative assessment strategies in class can add an extra six months of learning growth during a year of teaching. Therefore, it is a potent tool in promoting student achievement. However, Formative Assessment is only successful if students understand the outcome they’re looking to achieve, the standard against which the work is assessed, and how they can improve (Jarvis, 2020).

Formative Assessment can occur both formally and informally (sometimes just through a classroom conversation). This is why we refer to Formative Assessment as an assessment for learning. Comparatively, Summative Assessment (assessment of learning) is how we measure outcomes against a set of criteria at the end of a learning period. On the learning continuum, both Formative and Summative have their place as measures to understand the growth of each student.

As parents, there are several steps you can take to help foster a Formative Assessment mindset at home.

1. Visit PAM regularly to view the assessments your child has completed.

2. Look at the feedback provided on PAM together with your child. What can your child make/say/write/do? What are they ready to learn next? What do they need to do to improve their work?

3. Refer to the assessment instructions - have all components been completed?

4. Reach out to your child’s teacher. Communication between home and school is crucial in helping your child understand that you are a team.

5. Check-in with your child whilst they are working and ask clarifying questions like ‘what are you working on?’ or ‘tell me how you’re going to find out the answer to this one!’

6. Encourage your child to engage with self-assessment.

Subject Selection and Preparing for VCE 2026 – Save The Date – Tues 29th July

We will be hosting a Subject Selection Information Day for students currently in Years 9 and 10 to explore the options available for their studies in Years 10 and 11 in 2026. On Tuesday, July 29th, students will have time allocated throughout the day to visit the stands and ask questions of the relevant key staff.

That evening, we will run an Information evening for parents of Year 10 students who will be preparing for VCE in 2026. An information session will begin at 6:30 that evening, and the displays will remain open for parents to visit afterwards. This will give them the opportunity to speak with staff about the curriculum offerings and pathways available for students in 2026.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. We wish all families a safe, restful, and enjoyable break, and we look forward to welcoming students back. Term 3 will begin on Tuesday, 22 July.
