How do we feel, what are our emotions doing to our body and how do we calm these?

Our school has continued to follow the Peaceful Kids, Peaceful Classrooms program this term. Over the last fortnight we have been using calm bottles to relate to our emotions when we have been feeling heightened as well as using them as a coping strategy to calm ourselves.

The children have reflected on the following:

  • How do our minds feel when we are rushing around, or we have a lot of thoughts going on in our minds?
  • What are some feeling words you would use to describe how this feels in the body or the mind.
  • We can practice just noticing that we have thoughts or strong emotions simply by paying attention. This is like when we pay attention to the glitter in the jar. We can just notice the thoughts and feel the body sensations of the feelings in our body. We don’t need to change them, but just by noticing them we can feel calm.
  •  We can then choose to think in more helpful ways and make good choices.

The children have used a variety of resources to help with this learning and way of mindfulness. The video below is one of these resources.
