Term 2 was another exciting and productive time for our junior cohort. It is personally my favourite term, as the focus of English is on Imaginative Texts. In conjunction with this, we are hosting the 3rd Annual KCHS Creative Writing Prize. I was immensely happy to see so many students submitting their stories, poems, songs, and scripts to the prize throughout the term. Winners from 7-12 will be announced at the start of term 3. Well done to all who’ve contributed!
On the topic of creative writing, the folks at 100 Story Building delivered a fantastic ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ writing workshop for the Years 7s and 8s. I can honestly say they produced some of the best writing I’ve read in years!
Another major highlight this term was the Years 7-9 Market Stalls, as part of this term’s Humanities unit. We dedicated an afternoon to students creating a market in the courtyard, including everything from car washes, raffles, and retail stalls. Our Humanities teacher Brett and his team put in such considerable effort that the day was nothing short of a success!
Our Food Tech and Media units also promotes great successes, thanks to their respective teachers Deb and Tynan. Each unit engages our young people in practical learning, collaboration, harnessing real-life skills, and instilling a passion for a newfound creative hobby, or potential career pathway in cooking or Media Arts.
Similarly, our music program, run by Simon and his team, continues to thrive. Many of our 7s have undertaken singing or instrumental classes, while our 8s and 9s continue to enhance their skills. This was highlighted during the professional songwriting program, where a team of songwriters ran a course to teach our young people the art of crafting meaningful lyrics within a melody. The songs I was privileged to hear were simply beautiful!
We also had a wonderful highlight this term with the Years 7–10 Maths Probability Carnival. Students combined their knowledge of probability with real-life entertainment to create a vibrant array of games. From spinners and dice challenges to themed lucky draws, every stall was designed to let students apply their learning in a fun, hands-on way—and even win prizes! A huge thank you to Tayba, Milton, and Massimo for their considerable efforts in bringing the carnival to life. It was another fantastic success to celebrate in Term 2
Lastly, I want to say that I am proud of all our young people in the junior cohort who overcame barriers, whether academic, social or interpersonal. And this could not have been possible without the support of their families/caregivers, and the unwavering dedication of the junior school staff.
