Reflections on a Positive and Productive Term
As we wrap up another vibrant and productive term at KCHS, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our students, staff, families, carers and community partners for your continued support, dedication, and involvement in our school.
Learning in Action
This term has been full of engaging, hands-on learning experiences. From the 100 Story Building’s fantastic choose-your-own-adventure writing workshop, the Variety Leadership Program, and the Trade & Tech Fit Expo, to the Humanities Market Stall, VR Career Experience, and Zoo Excursion -it’s been wonderful to see our students connecting with their learning in such creative and meaningful ways.
A special highlight was the Variety Leadership Program, where I had the privilege of attending a two-day leadership course alongside our senior students. The program focused on building confidence, communication, and leadership skills - and our students represented KCHS with pride, insight, and maturity. It was an inspiring reminder of the strength and potential of our young leaders.
Thank you to all staff for your dedication in bringing these opportunities to life.
Celebrating Culture and Community
A standout moment this term was the Mural Launch and Smoking Ceremony, where we proudly unveiled our scar tree mural - a symbol of strength, growth, and cultural identity. The mural, created in collaboration with students, staff, and Aunty Merilyn, was brought to life through the guidance of our school nurse, Julie, and the cultural leadership of Uncle Shane. It was a truly powerful and unifying experience for our whole school community.
We also came together to mark IDAHOBIT Day, reinforcing our school’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging. A big thank you to the social work students and staff who helped create a space where all young people feel safe, valued, and seen.
Shaping Our Future Together: School Review in Term 4
Next term, we begin an exciting and important journey - our School Review. This is a unique opportunity for our whole school community to reflect, celebrate what makes KCHS special, and help shape our future direction.
At the heart of this process are our students, families, and community partners. Your voices, experiences, and ideas are essential. We want to know what’s working well, what could be better, and your hopes and dreams for the future of our school.
Over the past few weeks, the KCHS leadership team has been actively learning from other like-minded schools and models. We’ve met with Sydney Road Community School, The Outlook School, Travencore School, Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School (Lynall Hall), and the Berry Street Education Model to explore their visions, structures, and approaches. These rich conversations have given us fresh insights into how alternative and inclusive education can look - and how we might adapt and apply these ideas at KCHS.
Meanwhile, our staff have begun reviewing our current Strategic Plan, along with our mission, vision, and values. In Term 3, we’ll be inviting parents and carers to take part in online conversations to share your feedback and priorities. We’ll also sit down with students to talk about your experiences, your aspirations, and the kind of school you want to be part of.
This process is not just about planning - it’s about collaboration and community. We’re excited to work alongside you all to imagine and co-create a future that reflects the values, voices, and potential of everyone at KCHS.
Farewell, Thank You and Good Luck
This term, we said goodbye (for now) to Reema, who is heading off on an exciting UK adventure. Adam undertook a four-week placement at the end of this term and will begin parental leave in Term 3. We wish Adam and his family all the very best with the arrival of their new baby.
We also say a heartfelt farewell to Steph, who has been an incredible part of the KCHS community for the past seven years. Steph has contributed in so many ways - as a classroom support staff member, in her work with the Outdoor Education program, and most recently as our Canteen Manager. Her commitment, care, and ability to connect with students has left a lasting impact. On behalf of all of us, thank you, Steph. You will be greatly missed, and we wish you all the best in your next adventure.
Term Break Wishes
As we head into the break, I wish our students and their families/carers an enjoyable break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 3, refreshed and ready for another term of growth, learning, and opportunity.
