âœïž đđ„ Sports Gala Day đ„đâœïžÂ
Our Grade 5 and 6 students are eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Winter Sports Gala Day! After a fantastic first round earlier in the term, students are excited to once again represent the school with pride and sportsmanship. Whether itâs netball, soccer, AFL, or lawn bowls, the teams have been working hard during weekly sport sessions and are ready to put their skills into action. Itâs a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves, work together, and have a whole lot of fun. We canât wait to cheer them on!
Â
đ± LITERACY - Reading
This week, students will be completing a range of reading assessments to demonstrate their comprehension and analytical skills. Alongside these tasks, they will occasionally revisit picture storybooks that explore themes of culture and diversity, building on their understanding of how texts reflect different perspectives and experiences. Students will also engage in reading activities that require them to show their comprehension of the text and make inferences, drawing on evidence within the text to answer more complex comprehension questions.
Â
What you can do at home
Encourage your child to talk about the texts they are reading and how they are using clues in the text and illustrations to make inferences. You might like to ask questions such as, âWhat makes you think that?â or âHow do you know?â to support their thinking. Revisiting picture storybooks that explore culture and diversity together, can also spark rich conversations about your own familyâs experiences, values, or traditions, helping your child make personal connections to the themes explored in class.
Â
Writing
Students are continuing to develop their picture storybooks that explore themes of cultural diversity. Using their storyboards as a guide, students are drafting their narratives on their iPads, focusing on conveying a clear message and exploring meaningful themes. Each story will highlight aspects of cultural diversity, expressed through both written language and illustrations. As they write and edit digitally, students continue to develop their formatting and editing skills.Â
Â
In our classrooms, students have been enjoying short creative writing sessions using a fun and engaging spinner activity! Each session begins with three spinnersâone for a topic, one for an emotion, and one for a writing skill to focus on. This exciting combination sparks imagination and encourages students to think creatively while practising specific writing techniques such as using vivid vocabulary, dialogue, or figurative language. These quick bursts of writing are helping students build confidence, experiment with their ideas, and develop their writerâs voice in a playful and purposeful way.
Â
What you can do at home
Talk to your child about the story they are planning for their picture storybook. Ask them to explain the message they want to convey and how it connects to cultural diversity. This can help spark ideas and deepen your childâs thinking as they develop their narrative.
Â
đ± NUMERACYÂ
This week in Mathematics, students have been exploring the concepts of location and transformation. Through hands-on activities and visual tasks, they are learning to describe positions on a grid, follow and give directions, and understand how shapes can be flipped, slid, and turned. Students have been using mathematical language to describe reflections, translations, and rotations, while also working with coordinates and mapping skills. These lessons not only strengthen spatial awareness but also help students make connections between geometry and the real world.
Â
What you can do at home
Support your childâs learning by encouraging them to complete their assigned activities on Mathletics. These tasks are a great way to practise what theyâve learned in class. Talking through the questions together or asking your child to explain their thinking can help build their understanding and confidence in working with chance and probability.
Â
đ±Â CBL
This term our Big Idea is Diversity, specifically focusing on cultural diversity. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore multicultural Australia, the waves of migration and how this has shaped our country.Â
Â
Essential Question:Â
How does cultural diversity shape our identity and sense of belonging?âŻÂ
Â
Guiding Questions:Â
- What does cultural diversity mean to us?
- How has living in a culturally diverse society enriched our lives? Â
- What challenges can people face in a culturally diverse society?Â
- How can we inspire people to value cultural diversity?Â
Â
This week, students are working on their picture storybooks during CBL. These sessions will give students time to plan, write and illustrate their stories, drawing on their personal experiences, class discussions and knowledge of cultural diversity.
Â
đ±Â HOMEWORK
Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of
- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice
- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign
- 2 Nessy activities
Â
This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.
Â
 đż REMINDERS
đ± Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged. This is especially important this week as students are completing a range of online assessments.Â

DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA
Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
