Year 1/2 Learning Community

Growing our brains with Mrs Dallas, Mrs J, and Mrs Jacobs!

Literacy

The 1/2s are  winding up their work on the mentor text, How Did That Get Into My Lunchbox? Over the term, we have learnt how the various foods that fuel us through the day go from the farm to the supermarket, to our lunch box. Using the text, we have explored author's purpose, fact and opinion, summarising a text, conjunctions and compound sentences, and adding suffixes to base words.

Numeracy

We have continued to explore the concept of place value, patterns, and how we represent numbers. We are building three digit numbers, and representing in different ways, including drawing them, bundling and using MABs. We are beginning to stretch our brains by exploring standard forms and non-standard forms.

Here is one example we looked at during a class:

325

Standard form:

3 hundreds, 2 tens, 5 ones

Non Standard forms:

3 hundreds and 25 ones

32 tens and 5 ones

2 hundred, 12 tens, 5 ones

Integrated Studies

We are in the process of developing a whole school composting program to help reduce waste in our schools and to help the Green Patch to thrive. We have found out about food waste, packaging, recycling, and compost, and have conducted an audit of the rubbish produced by the 1/2 classrooms.

Here are some interesting facts we have found:

  • Food waste in landfill accounts for 10% of the world’s greenhouse gasses. This is because they create a gas when they break down. Also foods have water in them and when mixed with landfill make a toxic sludge that ends up in our waterways harming animals and the water we drink.
  • The most common wasted foods are fruit, vegetables, bread and left overs; most of these were able to be eaten when they were thrown out. If they were composted, they not only stay out of our landfill but make rich soil to help our gardens grow.
  • Every year Aussies throw out around 50 million tonnes of waste, which is about 2 tonnes per person. That means each of us throw out about the same as a 4WD.
  • Did you know Most of that waste can actually be reused, recycled or composted at home or at school?
