Round the classes

Reception: Katie

Over the past few weeks, the receptions have been finishing off learning the single letter sounds. We have been learning how to put these letters into words and have even had a go at writing our own sentences!

In maths we have learnt all about the number ten. We have discovered the different number combinations that make 10 and where we see the number 10 in our environment. Last week we started learning about Measurement in maths. Here we learnt about the terms big and small and brainstormed what is big and what is small.

In art we have been creating artworks based on Aboriginal stories and last week created some artwork that reflected our country.

As part of our work in Learner Agency, we Alex's class we have been learning about designing and have had a go at building a small base like structure. We have also had a lot of fun being tour guides for our kindy friends who have come to visit.

A couple of weeks ago we said goodbye to our student teacher Max. We hope to see him back at Uraidla Primary soon.

Year 1: Alex

On Monday, the Year 1 children worked with Jess to explore patterns. Using natural materials collected from outside, they created a variety of repeating patterns. We hope you enjoy looking at the wonderful patterns they made!

The Year 1 children also had a fantastic time playing Indonesian-themed board games created by the Year 5/6 class. The games focused on turtles, and they had to answer questions correctly to move around the board. Everyone had lots of fun, and we were very impressed by the creativity and effort the Year 5/6 students put into designing their amazing board games.

We have also been practising writing sentences using words that contain our focus sound. The Year 1 students have been working hard to remember important writing skills, including using capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. They have shown great enthusiasm and persistence as they challenge themselves to write as many sentences as they can!

Year 2: Suzie and Izzy

We have had a wonderful end to the term with lots of learning and growing in self -awareness. Students are identifying their needs as learners and using their strategies to be ready to learn with more independence.

We had a speech therapist visit our class to show us how to use Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) which is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for individuals with communication difficulties. Students enjoyed learning various modes of communication and how we can be more inclusive and self aware with our class conversations.

We have started a new class novel where we are delving into reading comprehension strategies of predicting, visualising and inferring.

We have moved onto recognising patterns in numeracy and continue to consolidate on previous learning on place value. Troy has been working with the class to develop their problem-solving skills, learning to identify the important information in a question to problem solve.

The students are ready for a well-earned break, enjoy a safe and happy holiday.

Year 2/3: Emma

This fortnight, we were fortunate to welcome the Red Cross to our classroom. They shared valuable information about being prepared for emergencies and helped students understand the importance of having an emergency plan. Students thoroughly enjoyed decorating and labelling their own pillowcases with items they believed would be essential in an emergency. It was a fun and engaging experience that encouraged important conversations about staying safe.

In Literacy, we have been exploring poetry, with a particular focus on the features of poems, including rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Students have loved creating their own poems using these elements and identifying poetic features in some of our favourite texts, including There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Mozzie. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and confidence grow as they experimented with different styles of poetry.

In Mathematics, we completed our unit on measurement, focusing on capacity and mass. Students enjoyed measuring and comparing the capacity of different containers using a variety of informal and formal units, creating their own measuring scales, and designing and building structures that could withstand a specified weight. The hands-on, practical nature of these learning experiences helped students make meaningful real-life connections and kept them highly engaged throughout the unit.

As another wonderful term comes to a close, I would like to thank you for your continued support. I hope you all have a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break. I look forward to another exciting and engaging term of learning together next term!

Year 3/4: Zoe and Kelly

Over the past few weeks, we have been busy with lots of exciting learning! In Mathematics, we explored probability and chance, learning new probability vocabulary and using a probability continuum to describe the likelihood of different events, from impossible through to certain.

In Visual Arts, students completed their incredible3D perspective artworks. They should be very proud of the creativity, patience, and effort they put into these pieces - they look fantastic!

In Writing, we focused on procedural texts, learning how to write clear and detailed instructions. We explored the importance of using time connective words (such as first, next, then, and finally) and adding specific details to help our readers successfully follow each step.

Zoe: I would like to say a huge thank you to the Year 3/4 class. You have been an incredible group of students, and I truly couldn't have asked for a better way to begin my teaching career. Thank you for your enthusiasm, kindness, resilience, and willingness to always give your best. Watching your confidence and growth over the term has been such a privilege. I will always look back on my time with you all with such fond memories, and I wish each of you all the very best for the future.

Year 4/5: Rachael and Troy

The Year 4/5 class has had a busy and rewarding end to the term! We have thoroughly enjoyed participating in Tri Skills over the past four weeks, developing new skills, working together as a team and having a lot of fun. We also loved taking part in lantern making for the upcoming Uraidla Show and can't wait to see our creations on display later this year.

We were fortunate to have Sophie Crippin, a pre-service teacher from Adelaide University, with us for six weeks this term. Sophie taught engaging English lessons, and students particularly enjoyed the hands-on unit she delivered on 2D and 3D shapes. She made a wonderful impression on our class, and we thank her for her care, kindness and dedication. We wish her every success as she continues her teaching journey.

In maths, we are currently exploring angles and learning how to measure and construct our own. In Spelling, we continue to find it fascinating to learn about different morphemes and how they help us understand the meaning of words. This week, we have been investigating the prefix inter- and discovering that it means "between" or "among" in words such as interstate, international and interplanetary.

Another highlight this term was our community walk for our participation in the Maker's Empire Challenge Building Communities, where students are designing a physical structure that helps both people and the planet. We have enjoyed welcoming different members of our community into the classroom to share their perspectives and inspire our thinking.

I am incredibly proud of the caring, supportive and enthusiastic community we are building in our Year 4/5 classroom. I wish all our families a wonderful and restful break and look forward to returning for another fantastic term together.

Year 5/: Sallie

Wow that was quick....2nd term has come to an end.  For maths we have been delving into fractions, multiplication and division.  Working hard to explore new strategies and what works best for our individual needs and understandings. Notetaking has been our focus for the last few weeks as we hone our skills in preparation for information report writing and our student lead research projects.  I was blown away with the narrative's that were recently completed by the class and lots of improvements are evident. Working towards self-allocated goals has helped the students decide what the need to change or improve.

Our Readers Cup participants are excited to compete against other Hills teams. I think nearly all members have read the required 5 novels....(quiz on Wednesday).

We were lucky enough to have Izzy and Molly (Uraidla locals) bring some reeds and grease proof paper and show us how to make lanterns.  We paired up with Rachael's class for this fun activity. You will be able to see our finished products at the show (around the performance truck).
