Physical Education

Physical Education in Term 2
Foundation students focus on developing the fundamental skill of kicking. They learn how to position their body, use the correct part of their foot and follow through when kicking a soccer ball towards a target. Students participate in engaging activities that develop balance, coordination, control and confidence with a ball. Towards the end of the term, students also explore the skill of punting, learning how to safely drop and kick a ball while developing hand-eye and foot-eye coordination.
Years 1–2 students dedicated the term to developing and refining their kicking skills. Students focus on accuracy, control and power while kicking towards stationary and moving targets. They explored how body positioning, balance and follow-through influence the success of a kick. Through a variety of partner, small-group and team-based activities, students begin applying these skills in modified invasion games while developing cooperation, communication and fair play.
In Years 3-6, students are focusing on invasion sports. Invasion sports are team games where the objective is to invade an opponent’s territory, maintain possession of a ball or object, and score points (goals, tries, or baskets) within a set time, while simultaneously defending your own territory. Examples include basketball, hockey, soccer, rugby, netball and handball.
Through these activities, students develop a range of fundamental movement skills, game sense, teamwork, communication, decision-making and sportsmanship. Lessons provide opportunities for students to practise skills in isolation before applying them in modified games and authentic game situations.
Years 3–4 students explore invasion sports through a range of minor games and modified sports. Students focus on key game sense concepts and strategies such as creating space, spreading out, moving into attacking positions, leading, supporting teammates and communicating effectively. They learn how these strategies contribute to successful team play while developing decision-making skills in game situations. Students apply their understanding through activities and games related to rugby and netball while continuing to refine fundamental movement skills including passing, catching, dodging and defending.
Years 5–6 students focus on hockey and advanced game sense concepts. Students build upon strategies learned in previous years, including maintaining possession, creating and using space, transitioning between attack and defence, supporting teammates and making tactical decisions under pressure. They refine hockey-specific skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving and shooting before applying these skills in modified and full-sided games. Throughout the term, students participate in round-robin competitions, allowing them to demonstrate teamwork, leadership, resilience, sportsmanship and strategic thinking in a competitive environment.

Division Netball
On Tuesday 9th June, our Lucas PS netball teams travelled to Selkirk Stadium to compete in the Division Netball tournament. This year we were proud to have both a Mixed Team and a Girls Team represent our school throughout the day.
The competition was extremely strong, and both teams faced a number of challenging matches. While wins were difficult to come by, our students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, resilience and determination in every game. They continually encouraged one another, communicated effectively on court and worked together to overcome challenges.
Most importantly, all players represented our school with excellent sportsmanship, positive attitudes and exemplary behaviour. They should all feel so proud of their effort and perseverance throughout the day!
Congratulations to all students involved for their commitment and the positive way they conducted themselves and thankyou to the parents who volunteered their time to help on the day!
