Art

In Art this term, it has been full steam ahead preparing for our whole school Art Show planned for the beginning of Term 4. More information about this very special celebration will be sent out to families' next term. It has been a busy time in both Art rooms with lots of 3-dimensional sculptures and 2-dimensional pieces finished and backed, ready for display at the Art show. Next term all classes will be busy preparing for our Great Barrier Reef themed Glow Gallery.

Foundation

The Foundation students have been exploring colour this term. They have been learning about primary and secondary colours through a playful art project featuring six little mice. Students had the opportunity to mix their own colours using paint before creating a paper collage. The students also enjoyed learning about the colours of the rainbow. They discovered that rainbows are formed when sunlight and rain occur at the same time. To create their rainbow artwork, students used bubble wrap to print raindrops, painted a watercolour rainbow, and added a paper sun and raincloud to complete their art. Students also explored how artists can inspire creative ideas through a study of the artist Jude Walker.

Year 1

The Year 1 students have been busy learning about the iconic Melbourne landmark, the Brighton Beach Boxes, as they created wonderfully detailed beach boxes of their own. Students used a range of mixed media materials in their sculptures, including paddle pop sticks, foam, fabric, "magiclay", and sand. To continue the beach theme, each student created a surfing figure and designed a unique surfboard for it to ride. Through this project, students developed their creativity, construction skills, and ability to combine a variety of materials to create a three-dimensional artwork.

Year 2

Our Year 2 students have been exploring Australian birdlife while learning about relief sculptures. They used plaster to create bird-shaped templates, which they then carefully painted to resemble Australian birds. Through this project, students developed their understanding of sculpture and practised using colour and detail to represent real-life subjects. Students are now moving on to paper weaving. They began by painting textured papers, which they will use to create looms for weaving larger-than-life watermelons.

Year 3

In Art this term, our Year 3 students created some spectacular paintings of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos. The students enjoyed learning how to draw a cockatoo with a crazy crest before painting in their designs. The students also worked on a piece of Art inspired by indigenous Australian artists. They learnt about Bunjil and drew and painted him from an aerial perspective flying over Wadawarrung country.

Year 4

Our Year 4 students learnt about the Australian artist Ken Done. They were inspired by his colourful paintings of Sydney Harbour. They use elements of his work, such as simplified shapes and bright, bold colours to create their masterpieces. They finished off their work by adding the Sydney Opera House made out of white foam. The students are also working on a textile piece of a Southern Boobook Owl inspired by the Aboriginal Artist Nadeena Dixon. We hope to have these amazing pieces sewn and finished off by the end of term.

Year 5/6

Our 56 classes have been inspired by the work of Victorian collage artist Pete Cromer. They have adapted elements of his work to create a felt collage of an Australian animal of their choice. They learnt about how to use a pattern and demonstrated fantastic craftsmanship putting together their designs. The final results are amazing. The students should be so proud of their finished artworks. This week they began work on a 3-dimensional wooden piece inspired by the Aboriginal artist Brownwyn Bancroft. We can’t wait to see how these pieces turn out.
