Year 1 Spotlight

At the beginning of the Inquiry unit Habitats, students took part in a fun, hands-on activity to explore the different features animals have. These hands-on experiences helped the students to think and learn about the different ways animals have adapted to survive in their habitats. They explored features such as bird beaks, claws, webbed feet, feathers, fur, scales, prickles, and camouflage.

The excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium on October 30th, gave students the opportunity to take a closer look at some water habitats. The tour guides helped the students identify the basic needs of several different Australian marine habitats including the animals and plants.

Some reflections:

"I touched a sea star. It was hard."- Toby Su

"It was amazing. We saw a swordfish"- Ziggy

"Squish, squosh the penguins went in the snow." - Jonah

"The shark egg was very very squishy." - Sophie B

In Literacy, the students are learning how to research their chosen habitat. During partner reading, they are reading information and sorting the important information into categories. They will then use this information to create a Diorama representation of their chosen habitat and write an information text about it.
