Supporting Smooth Transitions

As we approach the end of the school year, many transitions are taking place across our school community. Moving into a new year level, a new classroom and learning with a new teacher can be exciting, but it can also bring feelings of worry, uncertainty, frustration or being overwhelmed. These feelings are very normal. Adults can find change challenging so we need to be mindful that our expectations of children can sometimes be higher than what feels comfortable for them.

We see transitions as important opportunities for growth. Our approach is firmly centred on valuing each child as an individual and responding thoughtfully to their needs. Students are encouraged to be communicators, sharing how they feel. Risk-takers, trying something new even when it feels challenging. Open-minded as they approach change and caring towards themselves and others. Through reflection and support, children build confidence and resilience.

For students stepping into secondary school, we know this transition can bring added unknowns and worries. With support from both school and home, there are many helpful ways to prepare before the start of next year, such as talking through expectations, building independence and asking questions.

To support all students, St Columba’s provides social stories or social scripts, a Step Up Morning and opportunities to connect with new teachers before the start of the new school year. These experiences are designed to build familiarity, reduce anxiety and support a strong sense of belonging.

We value our partnership with families and thank you for working alongside us to support each child through these important transitions. Together, we help our students move forward with confidence, care and curiosity.
