Reception and Year 1 students have been learning to count numbers from 1 to 20 in Chinese. They have been practising how to say, read and write numbers using Chinese characters and pinyin. As part of this learning, students also explored the cultural meanings behind certain numbers in Chinese culture. They discovered that some numbers are considered lucky because they sound similar to positive words in Chinese. For example, the number 8 (八 bā) is seen as a symbol of wealth and success, and the number 6 (六 liù) represents smooth progress and good luck. Through class discussions, students learned how numbers reflect Chinese people’s wishes for happiness and success, deepening their understanding of how language and culture are connected.

This term in PE, students have been engaging in a variety of activities designed to develop their locomotor and ball skills further. Building on the foundations established earlier in the year, these sessions have challenged students to apply their abilities at increasingly complex levels, encouraging coordination, teamwork, and strategic thinking.

During weeks 1-3, students dedicated time to improving their throwing and catching skills through netball-based activities, where they practised chest passes, shoulder passes, bounce passes, and lob passes. Students participated in pass-and-go activities to refine their movement and communication skills during play. We also explored other forms of throwing and catching, including frisbee and “scoop and catch” games to enhance their hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and ability to work cooperatively with others.

During our soccer sessions, students have been practising important fundamental skills including dribbling, passing the ball, stopping the ball, shooting goals, and learning both defensive and offensive techniques. These skills have been developed through a combination of drills, partner activities, and team games, providing students with opportunities to apply what they have learned in a supportive and active environment.

Here are some pictures of students from reception through to year 4 during our soccer lessons.
