Term 4 in the art room...

Students in grades 1 and 2 engaged in weaving some spring bugs at the start of term 4. They made their loom from cardboard and wound around warp threads which are the vertical strands on the loom. The students explored how weaving is made from a repetitive pattern of in/out/in/out/in/out with horizontal weft threads. The weft threads crossing over and under the warp threads make the woven pattern. The students learned how to take their weaving off their loom, and then added eyes and antennas, and a mouth if they wanted. So cute!

Grade 5 and 6 students made clay tea-light candle holders. They were to design their clay holder with some holes in it to enhance the light from a tea-light candle.

Students in grades 3 and 4 modelled clay turtles. They explored pattern and aimed to make their turtle 3D. After the clay had been bisque fired, students took it back and glazed them with colour glazes. They could choose if they wanted to add a gloss glaze to make them shiny, or just leave them matt. The pieces were then fired a second time.

Students in grades 3 and 4 looked at the work of artist Natalia Gonchorova; an artist who loved to paint blossoms in vases. We took inspiration from her artworks and painted our own blossoms in vases with acrylic paint to celebrate spring. We used a charcoal colour for the top of our piece, and a warm apricot/pink for the base. Students could choose whether to make their vase transparent or a solid colour, and explored how to make their vase look 3D. They looked at slightly altering the colour of the stems once they had gone into the vase and looked at how petals were depicted. Students signed their names with a sharpie at the base of their work just like adult artists. Super efforts, 3s and 4s. I love these!

Grades 3 and 4 used straws as a loom in their straw-weaving activity. They learned how to begin the weaving project and also how to take their weaving off their loom at the end. They then designed a complementary background with which to showcase their weaving work. Some lovely vibrant work; well done students!

Grade 5 and 6 students looked at simple Mr Men/Little Miss characters from the talented author and illustrator Roger Hargreaves. The students were able to design their own character or make one from Roger Hargreaves' collection of characters. Using cardboard, they cut out two identical circle, square, oval, triangle or cloud shapes. Little cardboard 'tables' were taped in place to separate and join the two identical shapes, thus giving the character some depth. Paper clips were used to make the feet. Students covered gaps in their construction with masking tape, and then used PVA glue and tissue paper to cover their whole character as smoothly as they could. Embellishments were collaged or drawn on, such as hats, hair and facial features. Such great creative work from the students :)

Grade 5 students had one lesson to make a 3D heart or star. They could use any medium they chose to colour it in, such as acrylic paint, water colour paint, textas, pencils or oil pastels. They were asked to make it interesting with pattern and texture so it was not just a solid colour. The students were to use a cool colour background with a warm colour shape, or the reverse with a warm colour background and a cool colour shape. Once the colouring was complete, we glued them together with a hot glue gun to make them 3D. They look great!

At the start of term 4, prep students make some colourful spring blossoms using paint. They were asked to make concentric circles (circles within circles) with different warm colours to fill their page. At the end, they added green stems.

The preps begun making some Christmas puddings ready for their Christmas tree. They used magiclay to cover their round polystyrene balls. We needed brown as a base, so students blended yellow and red to make orange. Next, they added some green. When the orange and green were blended together, the students discovered their magiclay had turned brown. Once the brown was smeared all over their polystyrene ball, they flattened some white magiclay over their pudding. Next, students modelled some flattened green leaves and then added three small spheres of red magiclay. They looked like delicious puddings! Yum!
