Fire Safety

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) provide fire safety educational programs for children in their first year of school. Prep C have just participated in two fire education sessions to help prepare for the summer and be aware of what to do in the case of a fire. The firefighters showed the students all the safety gear that they wear and let the children know that, although they might look a little different when in their masks, they are there to help you. Firefighters are helpers.

During our first visit we covered:

  • Good fires and bad fires
  • Crawl Low in Smoke
  • Safe Meeting Place (families were encouraged to discuss their personal safety plan at home with their children)
  • What is an Emergency? 000 (Triple Zero)

The following week we had a second visit and we covered:

  • revision of Firefighter First Visit concepts
  • observation and discussion of the students’ Safe Meeting Place Worksheets
  • introduction to the concept: Stop Drop Cover Roll (what to do if your clothes catch fire)
  • a visit to the fire truck

FRV teamed up with firefighters from our local CFA and gave us a close up look at the fire trucks and a chance to spray the fire hose. It was a valuable program which was presented in a fun and engaging way for the children.

English

We have reviewed CVCC words (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) and introduced CCVC words (consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant). These words encourage students to really stretch out words to hear the middle and end sounds.

We have also learnt about adding the suffix 's' when there is more than one of something. Some words can sound like they end in 'z'. For example, words ending in g, n (bugs and hens), so we have been practising spelling a range of plural words.

After our visit from the firefighters, students had the opportunity to make their own fire trucks. We then talked about the topics we covered during their visit and wrote a recount. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm completing this activity.

A special mention goes out to Ella for the effort she put into her writing. She asked if she could continue writing after the lesson and wrote a fabulous detailed and engaging recount about the incursion. Fantastic work!

Maths

Prep C have been learning how to recognise, represent and order numbers. It is important to take time to look carefully at numbers that look similar, such as 16, 60, 61 and 66. This introduction to place value has encouraged students to use Unifix cubes and MABs to make the numbers and think about how many groups of ten are in the number and how many ones there are.

There are students that are working on different personal learning goals, so activities are adjusted to be at the point of need for each child.

Next week it will be time to put the tree up and count down to Santa's arrival! I'm looking forward to enjoying this time with Prep C.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Callaway
