Collage Resource Request

This term, students will be focusing on collage. The Art room is requesting the following items:

1. BOARD BOOKS: We are on the hunt for board books that are on their last legs. We are hoping to collect enough board books to collage over. We prefer board books that are broken or very worn, the sort of books that are destined for the bin. Having said that, we need about 140 board books, so we will take any you are trying to move along. They will be transformed into a wonderful art piece.
2. MAGAZINES: Our magazine stockpile is running low. If you have any magazines lying around that you would like to donate we would love them for collage. These magazines will be used by all ages so please do not donate magazines that have adult content. Children's magazines are best. Magazines aimed at children are best.

Storeroom

The storeroom is back in business and looking better than ever! Thank you to all who offered words of support and checked in while the storeroom was being repaired. 

Week One

Whole school NAIDOC celebration 

To celebrate NAIDOC week, the children learned about the meaning of Wurundjeri, wurun (Manna Gum) and the djeri (grub) that lives beneath it. We identified the mana gums in our own school and talked about times we had found the djeri exuvias under the tree. We would make a tree to display in the art room. To align with the 2026 NAIDOC theme "50 Years of Deadly"; the roots would represent where we have been and the branches would represent where we can go. The children decorated leaves and and grubs to display on the tree.

Prep

The Prep students were very excited to paint their pinch pots from Term Two. They took great care and made thoughtful colour choices. The pots were sealed with a gloss and packaged up in paper bags, ready to go home. There are a few pinch pots waiting patiently for their owners to claim them. If your child did not bring a pinch pot home, please encourage them to let me know.

We have been learning about printmaking. Students learnt about texture and how we can use rubbings to create different textures. We had hopes of going outdoors to find nature rubbings, but the weather prevented it. Instead we used texture plates to create our textures. Students were encouraged to use lots of variety in colour and texture.

Next step was to turn these rubbings into an abstract, geometric collage. The students practised using a ruler to draw a grid, then scissors to cut small squares. The students were encouraged to arrange their squares into rows and columns. The final product will be on display soon!

Grade 1/2

The students in Grade 1/2 have been learning about collage. We began by learning about Henri Matisse. Students created analog, abstract collages using paper. We have been practising different collage techniques. Stay tuned for finished work.

Grade 3/4

The Grade 3/4 students have been learning about analog collage. We watched a very impressive short documentary on Paper Cuts about Jacob Intilé. He spoke about how he used collage to break out of the mundane. After getting home from work, he wanted a way to stay off his devices and be creative. Collage provided this for him. The students were shocked to learn that some of his collage additions took 3 hours to cut out. 

We also viewed the work of Joe Castro along with other modern collage artists. Our first collage had to have a focal point, something the eyes drew to. Everything needed to be built around that. Compisition was key. The second challenge was to create a collage with a background and a foreground. These were created on wooden blocks. The results were excellent. 

Grade 5/6

The Grade 5/6 students have been doing some incredible work in the Art room this term. The students began the unit by looking at the intricate storytelling that Wuon-Gean Ho does through block printing. 

We also viewed the work of artists from Naarm/Melbourne.

Students voted to write their name for their lino print, however there was still the option to draw whatever they wished. In print making, the work will always print backwards, so we needed to get our names into a mirror image using tracing paper. 

We then learned about safety and practised using the V and the U tool. Watching the lino carve away was highly satisfying to many children. The focus and determination in the classroom was evident. 

The final stage was to use block printing inks to print their relief plate. We had access to white, black, red, yellow and blue. The students were asked to print one in white for the whole school display. After that they could experiment with mixing colours and creating gradients. 

Well done Grade 5/6! You all did such exceptional work! 

Production Props and Backdrops

We have been very busy organising props and painting the backdrops for the production. The students have been so enthusiastic and willing to get involved. The countdown is on to the Battle of the Beats.

Artist of the Month

Harriet, 1C

Harriet loves to create! She is careful and considered when she is making art. This attention to detail shines through in her drawings. Harriet has started using Simply Draw to learn new skills and techniques. She practises often and has made many sketches which she has proudly shared with her peers and teachers. Harriet should be incredibly proud of her work. This Grade One has some serious talent!!
