Developing strong number fluency is an important part of building confident mathematicians. Number fluency means being able to recall and use basic number facts quickly, accurately and flexibly.
When children are fluent with numbers, they spend less time working out basic facts and have more brainpower available for solving problems, explaining their thinking and tackling more challenging mathematics.
The good news is that number fluency doesn't need to involve lengthy worksheets or lots of homework. Just five minutes of fun practice each day can help children build confidence and automatic recall.
Have a Go with Cards
A standard deck of playing cards can provide lots of opportunities for quick maths games.
Flip and Add
* Remove the picture cards and use the number cards.
* Each player flips two cards.
* Add the numbers together.
* The first person to say the answer wins the round.
Make it harder: Try subtraction, multiplication or finding the difference between the two numbers or try flipping three or more cards.
