We acknowledge Dja Dja Wurrung, the Djaara people, as the traditional custodians of the land on which St Joseph’s Primary School is built. We pay our respects to the elders, past and present, and pay tribute to the unique role they play in the life of this region. At St Joseph's school we are inspired by the world’s oldest living culture and celebrate their continuing contribution to the life of this region and the sharing of knowledge. We call on the spirit ancestors to walk with us always as we share and learn together as one.
On Anzac Day, we pause to honour and remember the brave service men and women who served during World War I and World War II, especially the ANZACs whose courage and sacrifice helped shape our nation’s history. We also acknowledge the significant contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers, who served with strength and dignity despite facing inequality at home. Their legacy reminds us of the importance of respect, unity, and gratitude, and we thank all who served for the freedoms we enjoy today.
During World War I & 2, many Australian Aboriginal men volunteered to serve despite facing significant discrimination at home. Although they were initially barred from enlisting under the Australian Imperial Force rules, recruitment policies gradually relaxed as the war progressed, allowing hundreds to join. Aboriginal soldiers served with distinction on battlefields such as Gallipoli Campaign and the Western Front, often experiencing a greater sense of equality among fellow troops than in civilian life. However, upon returning to Australia, they were frequently denied the same recognition and benefits given to non-Indigenous veterans, highlighting ongoing inequalities.
Prayer for ANZAC Day
Loving God,
We remember with gratitude those who have given their lives in service to others. Grant them eternal rest and peace. Comfort the families and loved ones they have left behind, surrounding them with strength, hope, and healing. May we honour their sacrifice by living with kindness, courage, and a commitment to peace.
Amen.
