Principal's Report
- Tania Sorbello

Way back in 2022, in my first term as Principal of Fitzroy North Primary School, I sat down and sketched the simple mind map above. At the centre were the words “Imagine a school that…” and from there, my hopes and aspirations for FNPS spilled out onto the page. It captured what I believed our school could become; a place where every child is known, where individuals are celebrated, where learning is engaging and purposeful, where community is strong, and where we work together with trust and transparency.
Last week, when packing up my office, I came across the page again, and I was struck by just how much of it (and so much more) has come to life. We dared to dream and we created something truly special.
There are, of course, the visible markers of this journey. The completion of the building project. The Junior Playground, born from community determination (and patience…). The transformation of our Fergie Street frontage into a space designed by our learners, for our learners. These spaces matter. They signal pride, possibility and a commitment to providing the very best environment for our children.
But what I am most proud of cannot be captured in photos, shared in a newsletter, or even at an assembly.
It was found in the quiet, everyday moments.
It was found in the times a child needed support to navigate big feelings, and we stood beside them until they felt safe again.
It was found in the difficult, often uncomfortable conversations, where the easy path would have been the popular one, but we held steady and made decisions grounded in what was right for children.
It was found in the countless small interactions where a child felt seen, known and valued.
At its heart, that has always been my hope for this school. That, just like in the TV show Cheers, it would feel like a place “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” A place where every child matters, every story is understood, and every learner is supported to thrive.
Each and every day, I have carried a deep sense of responsibility to protect your children. To advocate for them, and to ensure they have every opportunity to learn and grow. Those moments, often unseen, are the ones I will carry with me. They are, without question, my proudest.
But none of this work has happened in isolation:
To our incredible staff: thank you for your unwavering commitment to your learners and to one another and to the vision.
To our families: thank you for your trust, your partnership and your belief in the work we have undertaken together.
And to our students: thank you for your curiosity, your honesty and the joy you bring to this place each day.
These are not my achievements. They belong to us all.
Every teacher, every parent, every learner has contributed to the strong, connected and vibrant school that Fitzroy North Primary School is today. Without that collective trust, this work would have been insurmountable.
As I prepare to take on my new role, I do so with immense pride in the school we have built together, and deep confidence in its future. While I do not yet know who will step into the principal role next, I know this; FNPS is in wonderful hands and in a wonderful place. The strength of this community will ensure it continues to flourish.
Many of you will have heard me say this before, but I often say to my own children “My wish for you it to one day have a job that you love as much as I love mine.”
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of leading this remarkable school and for entrusting me with what is most precious to you; your children.
Go gently,
Tania
