Work Experience

Work experience is well and truly underway for our students, with placements scheduled from Monday 22nd– Friday 26 June

Students have been supported in preparing their applications, including a recent presentation from Head Start, who provided valuable insights into what employers are looking for, tips on approaching workplaces, and suggestions for where to seek opportunities. Students have also begun revising their Occupational Health and Safety training in preparation for completing their Safe@Work certificate in Term 2. All required paperwork has now been distributed, and students should be actively working towards securing and confirming their placements.

Visit to Box Hill Institute & RMIT University

Careers staff have been out exploring and experiencing different institutions, including Box Hill Institute – Lilydale Campus and attending the Career Practitioners Day at RMIT University. The Lilydale campus offers a relaxed, green environment that supports hands-on, practical learning, while RMIT highlights the convenience of a city-based campus with strong industry connections and accessibility for students. By visiting and experiencing these settings ourselves, we are better equipped to support students and families in making informed decisions about future pathways that suit their interests, strengths, and preferred learning environments.

Study A Certificate III in Music Performance at Scoresby Secondary College

Did you know that Scoresby Secondary Colleges offers a Certificate III in Music Performance for our senior students? If not let me introduce you to this exciting VET Certificate III in Music Performance, along with our highly skilled and passionate year 1 trainer Ben Leahy.

Ben brings real industry experience into the classroom. This 2 year certificate provides students with the opportunity to develop practical skills in performance, sound production, and the wider music industry, all while working with industry standard equipment in a hands-on learning environment.

This program is a fantastic pathway option for a wide range of students. It can be undertaken alongside VCE, VCE VM, or as an advanced placement opportunity for Year 10 students who have a strong interest in music. It is also a scored Certificate so can contribute to your ATAR if that is your pathway journey. It offers both a creative outlet and a practical qualification, supporting diverse learning styles and future pathways.

My name is Ben Leahy and I teach first year VET music at Scoresby SC. I also teach classroom music from year 7 to year 10 and instrumental music in guitar and bass guitar across all year levels. I have completed a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Teaching, specialising in classroom music and co-curricular music.

I am an active member of the Melbourne music scene and have experience recording in professional environments and touring extensively around Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate.

Highlights in my professional career include performing at St. Kilda Festival, Gumball Music Festival in NSW, Brunswick Music Festival and playing at venues such as The Corner Hotel, Northcote Social Club and the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine.

My primary instrument is guitar, however, I also have experience playing pedal-steel guitar, dobro, double bass, electric bass and piano.

In first year, VET students get the chance to develop their ensemble skills by forming bands and participating in weekly rehearsals. These settings are designed to emulate a real-life band where students are responsible for setting up equipment, choosing repertoire, discussing creative and artistic choices and preparing for performances.

Students also learn music industry skills such as how to deal with copyright arrangements, how to plan a career in music and how to record demos that they can use to promote their work. VET music encourages teamwork, collaboration and student autonomy, all essential skills for our VET music students to continue to follow their passion in music well beyond the classroom!

In our next newsletter, we will introduce our Year 2 VET Music trainer, who will share further insights into the program and the experiences of students involved in their 2nd year.
