YEAR 6

FROM THE CLASSROOM

It has been wonderful seeing our Year 6 students enthusiasm as we dive into new learning this Term. 

In Reading, students have been developing their comprehension skills by using clues in the text to understand unfamiliar words, exploring main ideas, summarising what they’ve read, and forming thoughtful questions to deepen their understanding. 

In Writing, students have begun working with our new model text ‘Ice Forest’, focusing on how setting and weather can reflect a character’s emotions. They have been identifying descriptive details linked to emotion and have started boxing up the structure of the text to prepare for their own writing. 

In Maths, students have been extending their knowledge of fractions by learning how to expand and simplify them with increasing confidence. 

During Inquiry, students have started exploring democratic systems around the world. They have been comparing the benefits of Australia’s democratic system with others and identifying the three levels of government in Australia, along with the responsibilities of each.

"This week was a blast! I love the new math fluency that has been introduced to us at the start of this term. It definitely improves our mental math abilities. In Art, we have been focusing on drawing/sketching with charcoal. It is so fun because it’s a different experience that some of us have never tried before. In PA, we are creating a dance video in groups with Aboriginal songs!"

"This week has been the best because in PE we are training for athletics day and we are practicing triple jump, long jump, sprints, hurdles and relays!"

"This term has been very exciting! Some of my peers and I are doing aerobics, it is a sport where you dance and compete in competitions to earn awards like medals! It is very challenging but we are very dedicated to getting medals. Another part of school that is very fun is the kindness that my classmates show me. They are very truthful in the class and that’s what makes them special!"

"We started off this term with a blast of fun! We had a fun time during PE when we practiced our athletics skills, for our athletics day in Week 8 and on Friday we practice our sports for winter gala (also in Week 8). In STEM we learnt how static energy works and what powers it possess. Back in the classroom we learnt a lot of knowledge we do fun things such as math's fluency, reading pairs and taskmaster!"

"This year so far has been very good! Some of my friends and I have Winter gala in Week 8! Winter gala is where you go and compete with other schools in sports. The sport I'm doing is soccer. Theres some other sports like cricket I think and footy. Theres also athletics in the same week and we are training for athletics in PE like hurdles, running, triple jump, and long jump!"

WELLBEING UPDATE

As part of the Health Curriculum, our Year 6 classes will cover a discussion of puberty and changing male and female bodies in class during Weeks 6 & 7 of Term 2. Learning modules will cover topics including hormones, hygiene, growing bodies and boundaries – all as part of understanding puberty and the changing teenage body.

Below is a brief outline of the program contents that will be delivered to the students: 

PART ONE | HORMONES AND HYGIENE

Learn about the male and female anatomy, establishing good personal hygiene habits, the role of hormones in puberty and the emotional changes that come with puberty.

PART TWO | BODIES AND BOUNDARIES

How the male and female body changes during puberty, menstruation and period management, understanding consent, personal boundaries and respectful relationships.

The lessons will include specific information relating to menstrual products and all female students will be offered a range of free product samples and information to help them understand the menstrual cycle and different ways to manage their periods.

As part of these lessons, we like parents to be actively involved by also communicating with their child about the changes that occur with puberty and adolescence.

Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the lesson details, or would like some guidance in discussing this topic with your children.

REMINDERS

YEAR 7 TRANSITION

Last week, we sent home Year 7 transition packs for parents to fill out and return to school. Please read through all the information so parents are clear on what needs to be done. In Victoria, students are guaranteed enrolment at their local government secondary school. 

A reminder to please use the paper based form, not the online platform.

• We are learning to compare the parallel cross-sections of objects and recognise their relationships to right prisms 
• We are learning to use combinations of transformations to create tessellations and other geometric patterns

• We are learning to explain the meaning of citizenship, including the legal rights and responsibilities of children in a global context
