FROM THE CLASSROOM

This week has been another week of wonderful learning in Year 5!

The students have continued to show our school values daily, which has been great to see. They have had a fun week beginning to read our new novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman, whom students learnt all about last week. We are very enthusiastic to begin the story. This novel was chosen because of our new inquiry topic, Notable Australians, and this author certainly is one of those people!

Last week, we learnt about what it means to be a notable Australian and have been discovering some very important Australians who have helped shape our country. In Maths, we are ordering and comparing fractions and continuing to practise our fluency facts (+, −, ÷ and ×). Some wonderful writing has been created by our students, who are using dialogue and powerful vocabulary in their action narratives.

LEARNING INTENTIONS FOR NEXT WEEK

LITERACY

Students will continue listening to the novel 'Once' to learn new vocabulary and explore the meaning of these words by using context clues (context clues are hints, words, or phrases found within a sentence or paragraph that help a reader work out the meaning of unknown or difficult words without using a dictionary). They will also be recognising the important details in chapters to find the main idea and write accurate and succinct summaries. During our writing sessions this week, students will be writing their innovation narratives. They will use powerful vocabulary to enhance their writing and dialogue to create mood and show the actions of their characters.

MATHS

Students will be solving problems involving adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators using fraction walls, number lines, arrays, and hands-on materials such as counters and circles. They will continue to practise their maths fluency skills in multiplication and division to show they can calculate answers efficiently and accurately.

INQUIRY

Our Notable Australians topic has been a huge success. Students will be reflecting on what makes a Notable Australian by asking lots of questions and identifying common attributes and their widespread impact on people.

WELLBEING

Students will be demonstrating what character strengths might look like within peer or family relationships. We also have a whole-school focus on one of our school values, Respect. During our circle times, students are encouraged to share times they have seen someone show care and respect.

REMINDERS

TISSUES

As we near the cooler weather, we ask that you please provide a box of tissues for your child’s class. Thank you in advance as classes go through a lot of tissues.

LIBRARY BOOKS

Please remember to send a library bag with your child, so they can borrow a book to take home from the library each week.

YEAR 5 SPORT

This term students are lucky enough to be involved in learning some new skills. The sports are: Rugby, Basketball, Volleystars (an adaptation of volleyball/newcome), Soccer and AFL.
