FROM THE CLASSROOM

It has been a wonderful week in Prep!

In Investigations, students have continued their new unit ‘My Place’. During this time, they continued to explore places around the school that are special to them. Some of these places included; the classroom, gym, library, Breakfast Club and playground. They continued to explore the new and wonderful investigation stations, getting a deeper understanding of each area.

In Phonics, students explored the /e/ sound through a variety of reading, writing and speaking activities and were introduced to more heart words.

In Mathematics, we continued using different materials to show all the ways that we can partition numbers 6-9. You could encourage students at home to show you the ways that they can partition numbers using small toys or drawings.

During Wellbeing, students practised ways to seek, give and deny permission respectfully to one another. They used drama and drawing to practise the different ways that they could do this.

In Reading, students continued learning our new comprehension strategies for the term. Using some engaging fiction and non-fiction texts, students focused on identifying and understanding the main idea of a text, summarising the most important parts as well as asking and answering questions to show their understanding. Students were also introduced to new and interesting vocabulary from these texts and practised their understanding of these through a range of activities.

In Writing, students continued to explore our 'Little Charlie' text. We used puppets to help us practice new openings and endings. Here are some questions you can ask your child to see what they can share about our text;

What did Charlie have in his bag at the beginning of the walk?
Who did he meet on his walk?
Where was he going on his walk?
Why did he get hungry on his walk?

We’ve had a fantastic week together in Prep and we can’t wait to see what next week will bring!

REMINDERS

MOTHERS DAY BREAKFAST

On Monday the 8th of May there will be a Mother’s Day special breakfast run by Breakfast Club. More information to come, so please keep an eye out on Compass for further updates.

READER BAGS & HOME READING JOURNALS

A reminder to make sure your child is bringing their reader bag to school each day. Inside should be a small reader book, take home journal, and M100 Word pouch. Students will be able to take a new reader book each day if the previous one has been returned. It has been exciting to see students already having books written in their journals, and we look forward to celebrating their nightly reading in the classroom!

COMPASS PERMISSIONS

Please ensure to follow the permission prompts on Compass. This includes walking permission, permission to have your child’s photo taken and published in the newsletter or on social media. If you need assistance with this, please contact your child’s teacher.

SUPPORTING INDEPENDANCE IN PREP

A big thank you to parents for encouraging students to walk into the classroom independently each morning. It has been wonderful to see the smiles on their faces as they walk into the classroom independently and hold their own school bag.
