Friendship Skills Matter!

Positive friendships play an important role in children’s wellbeing, confidence and sense of belonging at school. Learning how to make and maintain friendships is a skill that develops over time and requires practice, support and guidance.

At school, children learn friendship skills through everyday experiences such as sharing, taking turns, including others, listening, cooperating and resolving small disagreements respectfully. These moments help children build empathy, resilience and communication skills.

Families can support friendship development at home by encouraging children to:• use kind and respectful language• include others in games and activities• listen to different ideas and opinions• talk through problems calmly• recognise how others may be feeling

It is also helpful to remind children that disagreements are a normal part of friendships. Learning how to work through challenges respectfully helps children develop stronger and healthier relationships over time.

Simple conversations at home can make a big difference. Asking questions such as “What was something kind you did today?” or “How did you help someone feel included?” encourages children to reflect on positive friendship behaviours.

By working together, we can help children build the social and emotional skills needed to create caring, respectful and supportive friendships both at school and beyond.
