More! is certainly the Magis mantra. We had four competitions in the space of two days, and we won’t be slowing down next week either!

Mock Trials

Round 2 of the 2026 Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition was held on Monday evening at the WA Supreme Court. Our team won their case against Shenton College - appearing for the Prosecution in a criminal matter. There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to trial, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules, and their upcoming senior school exams, enthusiastically attended lunchtime meetings. I would also like to thank Mr Harris for his assistance on the night.

Our Round 2 team:

  • Junior Barrister: Maximus Ayoub
  • Senior Barrister: James Sommerfield
  • Solicitor: Joshua Standen
  • Witness: Isaac McCready
  • Witness: Lily King
  • Court Orderly: Tighe O’Toole

The team’s next case will be a civil trial against Wesley College and will be held on Monday 15 June (Term 2, Week 18) at the WA Supreme Court.

da Vinci Decathlon

On Monday and Tuesday our top Years 7 to 10 scholars competed in the 2026 da Vinci Decathlon held at the University of Western Australia. The decathlon is a national academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Our students competed against over 60 teams across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography, and legacy. The standard of work submitted by students is always exceptionally high and the competition is fierce. We congratulate our students on an outstanding effort. Our Year 10 team won first place in Creative Producers and our Year 9 team came third in English. It was a fantastic two days and a wonderful opportunity for our Magis students to interact with like-minded students from other WA schools. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues Ms Gray, Mr Connellan, and Ms Harding for their assistance at the competition.

Novice JTC 2 won their Make-Up Round debate against Shenton on Tuesday evening. This was a postponed debate from Round 1 of the WA Debating League (WADL) Schools Debating Competition (SDC). We are now more than halfway through the competition, with only two rounds remaining, before it’s determined which teams will progress to the state finals – and with half of our teams remaining undefeated, our College looks set for another final’s showdown.

Please note: Round 4 will be held on campus on Tuesday 12 May (Week 13). This round will be online, due to our current debate venue being unavailable. Communication has been sent to families.

World Scholars Cup Update

It’s almost alpaca time! Our World Scholars have been studying their curriculum since the beginning of the year – and next week, their knowledge and skills will be tested as they compete at the 2026 World Scholars Cup (Perth Regional Round). This two-day competition will be held on Friday, 22 May at Sacred Heart College and Saturday, 23 May at Kingsway Christian College. A copy of the schedule of events can be found below, along with maps of both competition venues. We wish all our World Scholars Teams the very best of best of luck! As they say at WSC: Pwwwaaaa!

College Chess Tournament Update

Let the battle commence! Our College Chess Tournament begins on Tuesday next week. We have over 90 eager students taking part from Years 5 through to 12. All chess players have been added to Teams and chess fixtures will be uploaded each week, with a hard copy to be found on the Magis Noticeboard. All games will be played in the Innovative Hub in the Ignatian Centre (Library). These games are played as knockout rounds. Students are reminded that games begin at 1pm sharp and must be concluded in their allotted timeslot. Only final games can be played over multiple lunchtimes. We wish all competitors best of luck, and we look forward to seeing who will be named this year’s College Grandmaster!

What’s happening next week?

Besides Round 1 of our College Chess Tournament and the World Scholars Cup, we also have our Years 11 and 12 student representatives taking part in the next Magis Academic Challenge. This quiz will test student knowledge of humanities, art, languages and literature – with our Years 7 to10 students taking part the following week.

You can keep up to date with our schedule of competitions and events by viewing the Magis calendar – which can be accessed below.
