Term 2 Week 6 - 29th May 2026

Can you believe that it is Week 4, already?! The first part of the term has been busy and absolutely flown by! And things aren’t slowing down anytime soon. This term has lots of different things happening so keep your eyes out for notifications and upcoming events.

Our Prep students have been very busy over the past few weeks! We thoroughly enjoyed two visits from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade as part of the Fire Ed program. A huge thank you again to Cameron Brand and his team at Highett Fire Station for organising and running these engaging and informative sessions for our students.

We also welcomed a wonderful wildlife incursion to our school, where the Preps had the opportunity to meet a range of Australian animals up close. It was fantastic to see so many brave Prep students confidently patting and holding the animals! We have then used what we saw to write our literacy recounts.

At the moment, students are also participating in both Numeracy and Literacy assessments as we begin preparing Semester One reports. We are very proud of the progress all of our Prep students have made so far this year and look forward to sharing their learning with families.

If you need to speak with your child’s class teacher, please feel free to email to arrange a suitable time. Mornings can be quite busy as we prepare for the students to enter the classroom, so scheduling a time ensures we can give you our full attention.

What we are learning!

Maths:

In Maths, we have been exploring 2D shapes and learning to identify and describe their different features, including sides and corners. Students have been recognising shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles and triangles in both the classroom and the world around them.

The Preps have enjoyed participating in hands-on activities including shape hunts, building pictures using shapes and creating their own colourful designs. It has been wonderful to see students using mathematical language confidently and sharing their thinking with their classmates.

Inquiry:

Fire Education Incursion:

Our Prep students recently enjoyed visits from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade team as part of the Fire Ed program. During these sessions, students learnt important information about fire safety, what to do in an emergency, who to call for help and discussed safe meeting places with their families.

The Preps especially enjoyed participating in practical activities and practising “Stop, Drop, Cover and Roll.” It was wonderful to see students so engaged and enthusiastic while learning these important safety skills.

Literacy:

Our literacy sessions run from 9.10am right through until 11.30am. We appreciate families ensuring students arrive promptly each morning so that all literacy learning can begin on time. A settled and punctual start to the day allows students to fully participate in our literacy block and maximises valuable teaching and learning time.

In Literacy, students are continuing to build their confidence and independence with reading and writing. Many students are now beginning to challenge themselves by writing simple decodable sentences using the sounds and words they have learnt in class. It has been wonderful to see the growth in students’ reading skills, with many Preps becoming more confident and fluent readers each week. We are very proud of the effort and persistence students are showing during Literacy sessions.

We have also been focusing on recount writing. Students particularly enjoyed writing about their wildlife animal experience using photos from the day to help them remember and sequence events. Soon, students will also be writing about our recent park excursion. Writing about real-life experiences helps students build independence and confidence, as they are able to draw on activities they have personally participated in rather than only experiences they have read about in books.

Readers continue to be sent home. We kindly ask that you continue to be proactive reading with your child each night.  Home readers should not be difficult for your child. Please remember to fill in the reading diary with notes on how they are progressing as we do read these regularly.

Leader In Me:

Students are also participating in regular Leader in Me (LIM) lessons each week. During these sessions, students are learning important skills such as being kind and respectful, making good choices, listening to others and working together positively with their classmates.

The Preps have enjoyed learning about the different habits through stories, discussions and classroom activities. It has been wonderful to see students beginning to use the language of the habits in their everyday learning and friendships across the classroom and playground.
