Year 8 and 11

We are now halfway through Term 2, and the month of Half-Yearly Assessments is upon us. Over the coming weeks, students in Years 7 to 11 will be engaged in a range of assessments including individual tasks, group projects, and formal examinations. Some boys may face two or more tasks within a week, so organistation and planning are essential to manage stress and avoid panic. I am available to meet with any students to help develop a personalised study plan for these assessments.

Year 8

To get ready for an assessment, start by asking what you need to study. Go through the assessment notification and highlight topics. Make a simple plan to study each topic. Do a little bit, 1-1.5 hours of study each day. Use your notes and books to help you learn and make a note of something you do not quite understand. If you do not understand something, ask your teacher for help. Try some practice questions. Take breaks and look after yourself by eating healthy. Be positive and give it your best effort.

Please remember to save the date for the Year 8 Parent Teacher Evening: Tuesday, 23 June (Week 10)

Year 11

Remember this is a three-term year and you now in the midst of building the foundation for your Higher School Certificate. Plan and be prepared. There are no excuses for a lack of preparation.

Here are some simple tips to help students succeed during this busy time:

  1. Manage your time effectively by timetabling study. Be specific about subject and topics.
  2. Set clear and achievable goals. Timelines to complete topics and practice questions.
  3. Ensure you get a good night’s sleep. Eat healthy, fast food often leads to highs and lows followed by fatigue.
  4. Stay motivated and confident.
  5. Avoid distractions. The phone and PC will still be there after assessments, and nothing would have changed.
  6. Make the most of your teachers’ support. Clarify Task Notices and allow your teacher time to give you feedback on practise submissions.

Year 11 students will receive their reports in week 10. These reports may not include their latest tasks which continues to the last week of term. As we approach the end of the term, we look forward to seeing a more engaged Year 11 group working together to support each other in achieving their personal best.

Remember: teamwork makes the dream work! Help and support each other to achieve, and if you can explain it to a mate then you reinforce your understanding.

Good luck with your Half- Yearly Assessments.
