Epping Boys at Athletics Australia National Championships
While many boys spent the holidays relaxing the following Epping boys were selected to represent NSW at the Athletics Australia National U18 Championships.
Selection to wear the sky blue of NSW is no mean feat as athletes must meet tough qualification standards or place in the top 3 in their chosen event at the NSW State Championship. This makes competing at nationals the 'big dance' for athletes, allowing them to compete against the best athletes in the Oceania region.
EBHS typically has a strong presence and this year was no different.
James W, Daniel C, Rhys C, Charlie S, Daniel S and Mitchell C were all selected in the NSW team for 2026.
James W:
James has had an interrupted season with injury and HSC commitments, but he managed to pull out a season’s best performance at Nationals, placing 15th overall in 48.88s. A lot to look forward to next season.
Daniel C:
Competing in multiple events Daniel started his competition with the U18 110m hurdles, an event he would also contest on Sunday as part of his U18 Decathlon program. A couple of hits on the first two hurdles slowed his start a bit but he powered home to finish in 14.90s placing 13th overall in a new PB time.
Daniel had a day's rest before he started his pet event the U18 Decathlon. This two-day event is easily the toughest track and field event by far. By the end of the first four events Daniel was the third-placed Australian, a result he held onto in the 400m when he recorded a 1.1 second PB time. On day two Daniel started as he finished day one with some big results, including a massive 30cm PB in the pole vault clearing 3.30m. A big PB in the javelin as well saw Daniel still sitting as the third-placed Australian going into the 1500m, an event no decathlete enjoys, including Daniel. He knew that the fourth-placed runner had run more than a minute faster than Daniel in the past, so Daniel needed to run around 30 seconds faster than his existing PB. Daniel delivered. He finished the 1500m in a new PB time of 5m 24.76s to maintain his fourth overall and third in Australia spot, securing the bronze medal in a red-hot field.
A national medal is an amazing achievement—congratulations, Daniel.
Rhys C
Competing in the U17 400m hurdles Rhys was 6th across the line in his heat and 18th overall in a time of 60.42s. This time is under the current U18 national qualifying time. Rhys was back out less than an hour after his hurdles for the U17 5000m Race Walk. Rhys finished in 26m 47.32s, placing 4th in Australia.
Charlie S and Mitchell C:
Epping Boys' pole vaulters were to number two but a training injury resulting in an ankle fracture saw Mitch withdraw from the event. This left Charlieto wave the EBHS flag at the event. Charlie has shown incredible improvement. This is a new event for him, and he finished a respectable 6th place with a clearance of 2.40m.
Daniel S:
Competing in both Heptathlon and individual events meant Daniel had a busy week on the track. Having only made a recent return to the track after persist injuries Daniel started his competition well with a solid day 1 in the U16 Heptathlon. Day 2 was a mixed bag but still a solid competition finishing 8th overall. His 100m Hurdles heat run saw him finish with a PB 14.11 just missing out on a final spot.
These boys represent EBHS, their local athletics clubs and Team NSW, showing good sportsmanship and respect for their competitors, teammates, coaches and officials.
Congratulations, boys!!!
