From the Classroom - B5 (Jess)

It has been a busy start to the term in B5, but it has been wonderful to see how quicky students have been able to settle back into their regular classroom routines.
Maths
Our first area of study this term in Maths is Fractions. We have been exploring this topic in lots of different ways, including representing fractions numerically and with drawings, locating fractions inside and outside of the classroom, combining fractions and investigating equivalent fractions. Students have greatly enjoyed the hands on aspects of this topic, such as using counters to represent collections and folding strips of paper into different fractions.
Writing
In Writing, we have been building our skills to develop exciting and engaging narratives. Students have practised using drop in clauses, personification and power of three, just to name a few, to describe their characters and settings in greater detail. Our next challenge will be to implement these new skills into our writing independently, with students getting to work on developing their own narrative towards the end of this week.
Reading
To make connections with our History Unit on the First Fleet and the impact of colonisation on First Nations People of Australia, we have been exploring related texts including 'Tom Appleby - Convict Boy'. We began with building our knowledge of the relevant vocabulary used in the text that was relevant to the era, such as convict, settlement and colony. This week, we have been exploring the character of Tom Appleby as a young boy, identifying traits that describe his character and using evidence from the text to support our thinking.
