ENRICHING SCHOOL EXPERIENCES

One late afternoon in Term 3, I had the pleasure of watching our Senior Girls Netball A team defeat The Knox School in a closely fought grand final. Remarkably, that same day saw six of our teams competing in grand finals, with five achieving victory! This marked the end of a highly successful season in the EISM (Eastern Independent Schools of Melbourne) competition.

It was particularly pleasing to see so many Year 12s participating in school sports, undoubtedly gaining valuable experience — and for many, a premiership medal as well.

Later that day, audiences thoroughly enjoyed the Junior and Senior School Vocal Soirees, where our students showcased a rich variety of performances, including pieces from operas, popular musicals and modern pop. Immediately after the final performance, several of us headed to the opening of the ELC to Year 10 Art Show, where an impressive display of our students' artwork was on exhibit.

What was most striking was seeing students receive awards for their art who had just competed in grand finals earlier in the day and had also performed at the soiree only moments before.

I believe it’s this involvement in co-curricular activities that truly enriches the school experience. Such participation helps students to develop essential skills beyond the classroom, leading to a broader and more well-rounded individual at the end of their schooling. Furthermore, these experiences create long-lasting memories and cherished moments for everyone involved.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE – A NEW STRATEGIC PILLAR

Inevitably, school reunions spark cherished memories of musicals, sports teams, competitions, camps, and various clubs and associations that play a vital role in the overall school experience. Acknowledging this, this year we introduced a new strategic pillar called Student Experience, which encompasses all aspects of student life beyond the classroom. This initiative complements our two other key focuses: Inspired Learning Culture and Student Character and Care.

In addition, we have had a wonderful year across many facets of school life. It was fantastic to see our Global Connections Program flourishing, with successful trips to France and Japan in 2024 and an exciting tour to China planned for 2025.

On stage, our students captivated sold-out audiences with the Senior School production of High School Musical and the Junior School’s rendition of The Wizard of Oz. For the first time, the Annual Concert was held at the Melbourne Recital Centre, which provided a stunning backdrop for a wonderful night of music.

Our students also enjoyed participating in various programs, including the Bionics Institute STEM Mentor Program, Tournament of Minds, Future Problem Solvers, DAV debating competitions, Sport Carnivals, as well as a variety of camping experiences.

We will also fondly remember 2024 as the year of the Paris Olympics, marked by Australia’s impressive medal haul. For two weeks in July, our school was captivated by the games, especially in the Junior School, where students engaged in their very own Olympic competition. A particular highlight for our Junior School students was the visit from three-time Olympian Tamsin Hinchley, who inspired many with her stories.

BUILDING DEVELOPMENTS

It has been great to see our students making full use of The HIVE, our new state-of-the-art science, library and technology facility. Officially opened earlier this year by David Southwick MP, the event brought together past staff, students, current community members and special guests to celebrate this exciting addition to our School.

We are currently applying the final touches to the Middle School block, with refurbished classrooms set to be unveiled soon. This renovation will enable us to convert the two existing science laboratories into a modern, well-equipped cafeteria, complete with a comfortable seating area for students.

Plans for a major upgrade to Dalton Hall are also underway, marking an exciting period of development for our school community.

CLASS OF 2024

This year marked the first year of Kilvington’s second century, and it has been a highly successful year in the School’s journey. I wish our graduating Class of 2024 all the best as they prepare to leave school. They are a wonderful group of young people who have had a profoundly positive impact on the School during their time here. I have no doubt that they will each contribute meaningfully wherever their paths may lead.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to our incredible Kilvington community — staff, students, parents, Board members, alumni and partners — for making this year so special for our school. Thank you all for your energy and dedication!
