All Prep to Year 4 students started their Intensive Swimming Program on Monday and have continued this each day throughout this week.  Luckily the weather has improved since our first session, but this hadn't dampened the fun and smiles on the children's faces, even from Day 1.  Special THANK YOU to staff members, Mrs Hayes, Mrs O'Shannassy and Mel McFayden for getting in the water and assisting with teaching a group across the week.  THANK YOU EVEN MORE SO to our wonderful VOLUNTEERS who maintain their swim teacher qualification and donate their time to the teaching of the students of St Joseph's:

Three of our volunteer staff - Bill, Jacki and Leonie.

STATE ATHLETICS FINALS

State Track and Field Primary Boys/Mixed Girls State Championships

Date:Wed 6 Nov 2024 10:00 am

Venue:The State Athletics Centre, Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park

LACHIE LEVER competed in the State Athletics Championships two weeks ago in the 12/13 year boys Shot Put in his T01 Multi-Class category and ALFRED HINDLE received a special invitation as a qualifier in the T35 and F35 Mult-Class Category for all three of his events: 12/13 year boys 100m, 200m and Shot Put. Competing against Victoria's best athletes in their classification, Alfred finished 7th in the State in each of his events, while Lachie finished 5th in the State for his shot put.  Both did extremely well, considering the heat and then the boys reported having to duck for cover due to a lightning storm that soon followed. Melbourne's four seasons in the one day again!

We are so proud of our Super Athletes to have made it to State!! Well done boys!

5/6 Sir Hubert Opperman Bike Skills Challenge

Joey's Jump Starters - 2nd Place Overall on the day
Joey's Jump Starters - 2nd Place Overall on the day

Despite blistering winds and early showers, the two teams set off from Rye Pier Park for the Bike Skills Challenge venue of Rosebud Sound Shell.  Ably led by Mrs Hayes, the students rode the foreshore bike track in single file, with Mrs Todd sporting a flat tyre the entire journey and bringing up the rear! What was that that I said students about checking that your bike was in good working order!! Phew! Wish I'd listened to my own advice!

In teams of 5 boys and 5 girls, our two teams worked through a number of Skill Challenges including The Mine Field, Full Stop, Figure 8, The Chicane and the Side-by-Side Formation Ride, all requiring balance, manoeverability and riding precision. A special thank you to Mrs Hayes for giving up her time to accompany us on the day and also to Assunta, Catherine and Bianka for their assistance on the day.

3/4 & 5/6 Badminton Victoria Clinics

This year, we have been fortunate to receive Sporting Grants for 3 out of the 4 Term Grants applied for: Term 1 - Basketball, Term 2 - Gymnastics and Term 4 - Badminton.

Last week we used part of our Term 4 Grant to run coach-delivered clinics by Ben Huggard from Badminton Victoria on Wednesday and Friday for all Year 3 to 6 Students. They learnt to serve, hit forehand and backhands, as well as learning some of the rules of the game.  We will continue learning the skills during PE classes and will finish with a doubles tournament in two weeks time.

Warm Regards,

Jenny Todd
