Science Talent Search

Jordan O -  Awarded a Major Bursary

Jordan’s Science Talent Search Project 2024 is a brilliant demonstration of how technology can protect the fish and frog species of the Yarra River. He designed an innovative working model featuring a Lego piston pump to circulate water, a Lego litter collector (motorised) to capture floating debris, and a bioretention basin to filter pollutants.

After testing multiple pumps and fine-tuning the litter trap, Jordan’s persistence led to a successful, live-action model that cleaned actual polluted water. This outstanding project won the Working Model category bursary award and showcases his creativity, determination, and commitment to protecting our environment.

Lauren B and Katie O:  Awarded a Distinction

Lauren and Katie’s Project 2024, The Mountain Pygmy Quest, is a brilliantly crafted board game that captivates and educates players aged 6-12 about the endangered Mountain Pygmy possum. The game challenges players to collect 25 tokens and reach the mountain’s summit by answering trivia questions about biodiversity, all while avoiding environmental hazards. With two-sided gameplay—one side depicting the possum’s natural habitat and the other showing fire-ravaged terrain—the game offers an added level of difficulty and excitement. After extensive research and design, Lauren and Katie’s hard work earned them a well-deserved Distinction in the game board category, highlighting their creativity and dedication.
