Sustainability News

Dear Families,

Well, I think this week has truly shown us that Garrawang – Kangaroo Apple Season – is upon us!! This season, roughly December, is typically known for its thundery, stormy weather. Look (and listen!) out for the currawong or the yellow-tailed black cockatoos who come down from the mountains before the rains. Has anyone else been watching the lightning storms in the evening? They are great when followed by rain, but it can also start fires – so it’s a good reminder to be prepared. Has your family discussed what to do if affected by a storm or fire? Maybe talk to your local CFA and make a plan.

Garrawang is also the time when cicada ring out in the warm evenings, just on dusk. When I was young, the late afternoon cacophony was a reminder that school holidays were just around the corner!

At this time of year, you might, if you are very lucky, even find a Christmas beetle. These jewel-like critters were once a common sight but are becoming increasing rare. They love tea-tree so, if you have space, plant one at your house to see if they appear! It is also about time for the Christmas Mint Bush, known as Coranderrk, to flower. The Gardening Club have just planted some at the front of the school during our recent planting, but it will take a few years and some TLC to see these babies grow into flower. When you are out and about, keep your eye out for Cherry Ballart coming into fruit and beware as lizards and snakes become more active.

In other news, we have finally received our barcode for the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)! At the Spring Market, students collated their empty juice boxes and we took them to the nearest deposit site – which happens to be at the milk bar right next door! We ended up raising $17.30 – just from one event! This money will go straight to sustainability projects at BHPS. We are encouraging all families to collect as many 10c containers as they can over the summer holidays and donate the proceeds to our school. Simply collect eligible 10c containers, take them to a deposit site and select Bimbadeen Heights Primary School as your donation recipient. Download the CDS Vic app to make it easier.

We would love to acknowledge families who participate in the new year. Stay tuned for details!

Until next time,

Miss Murphy
