Year 8 Girls Futsal

On the 19th of November, our Year 8 Girls ventured to Woodmans Hill Secondary College to compete in the Eureka Division Futsal and with a few trainings under our belt we were determined to come away with a win.

Coming up against Phoenix College first, we started off strong, however were unable to convert any goals, whilst Phoenix converted one, resulting in a 0-1 loss. Our next opponent was Ballarat High School, and although it was a competitive game, neither team were able to score, resulting in a nil all draw.

Our final game was against Mount Clear, who had proven to be the strongest team, defeating us 0-1. As there were only 4 teams, we were able to play in the Semi Final. This turned out to be a very close game, ending in a penalty shoot-out. Katie Mahoney stepped up with the first shot, and was able to land the ball in the top right-hand corner. Meanwhile, Hazel Coleman stopped some crucial penalties from Phoenix. With the penalty shoot-out the best of 5, we ended up going to sudden death as the scores were neck and neck. Katie was once again able to secure a goal, while Hazel blocked their final shot, meaning we were through to the Grand-Final.

We were again facing a formidable Mount Clear, who had beaten Ballarat High 2-0 in their Semi. In what was another close game, Macey Howlett scored in the 6th minute, meaning we were up 1-0. The girls needed to defend well and defend will they did! Mount Clear took 8 shots in the final 6 minutes but our girls worked together to block or save every one. Their persistence was motivated by a promised stop-off at McDonald's on the way home. Before we knew it the buzzer went, leaving the girls excited and shocked at being crowned the Year 8 Girls Futsal Champions. Congratulations girls; this is a fantastic example of persistence paying off!
