SAVE THE DATES for the Re-Opening of the Cathedral

Altar Servers - Cathedral Parish

In preparation for the upcoming Cathedral reopening events and the celebration of Christmas, we will be having a reorganisation of the Altar servers in the Cathedral Parish. The reorganisation will ensure that we are complying with all child protection and safeguarding requirements and that there is a uniformity in serving styles with a view to achieving unity in this important area of ministry. If you or your children would like to become an Altar server, (Year 3 and above having made their First Holy Communion) please attend the information session which will be held in the Torreggiani Room (Cathedral Precinct) at 3.30pm on Monday 25 November. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We look forward to seeing you there!

Feast of Christ the King - 24th November

This coming Sunday marks the final Sunday of the liturgical year. On this occasion, we commemorate the Solemnity of Christ the King.

The Feast of Christ the King was introduced during a time of political turmoil and rising secularism. In establishing this feast, Pope Pius XI aimed to remind the faithful of Christ’s sovereignty over all earthly rulers and worldly powers. Today, the celebration continues to inspire Christians to see Christ not only as a spiritual leader but as the true King whose teachings transcend human governments and ideologies.

Placed on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, right before Advent, the feast reminds us of the cyclical nature of faith—ending with the reign of Christ and beginning anew with the anticipation of His birth. It serves as a bridge between Ordinary Time and the Advent season, calling on Christians to prepare their hearts to welcome Christ as King and Saviour.

As the liturgical year concludes, this feast offers a moment of spiritual reflection, grounding believers in the knowledge that, despite the challenges and uncertainties of life, Christ’s love and mercy remain constant.

Advent

Advent is the season that precedes Christmas and begins on the 1st of December. It varies in length from 22-28 days. The word “Advent” derives from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming.” During this season Catholics enter a time of hopeful anticipation and joyful preparation for the celebration of Christmas. Advent and Christmas offer us the opportunity to prayerfully commemorate the birth of Jesus, to become more aware of God’s presence in our everyday lives and to reflect on the second coming of Jesus at the end of time.
