Indigenous News
We acknowledge Dja Dja Wurrung, the Djaara people, as the traditional custodians of the land on which St Joseph’s Primary School is built. We pay our respects to the elders, past and present, and pay tribute to the unique role they play in the life of this region. At St Joseph's school we are inspired by the world’s oldest living culture and celebrate their continuing contribution to the life of this region and the sharing of knowledge. We call on the spirit ancestors to walk with us always as we share and learn together as one.
St Joseph's New Indigenous Mural
We are pleased to announce the completion of our brand-new indigenous mural at St Joseph's Primary School. This has been developed over the past 18 months, and we are incredibly excited for you all to see it.
Last year, all students were asked to complete a piece of artwork, based around including an Indigenous mural at our school. The samples from these creations were collected by the school's FIRE Carriers and presented to a local indigenous artist, Troy Firebrace.
Troy sat down with all the samples and together with the FIRE Carriers and Mr Walsh where the samples were narrowed down to 20. Within these 20 samples, the creators of these pieces were interviewed about the inclusion of certain Indigenous symbols and the story behind their creation. From there, Troy took all these samples and created a draft, which then turned into our final product for our Indigenous Mural, in which you see here today.
We couldn’t be happier with how it has turned out. We thank Troy Firebrace for his dedication and superb artistic skills for making this happen. We also thank every student who completed their own murals. Without these creations we couldn’t have our final product. We cannot wait for this mural to be seen by everyone within our community. It will remain part of our identity here at St Joseph's for many years to come.
