LEARNING & TEACHING

Literacy with Mrs Maria Lontos

Little Learners Love Literacy

In 2025, Holy Name will be introducing a systematic synthetics phonics programme in Prep, with the plan to push it into Grade 1/2 the following year.

Little Learners Love Literacy is an explicit and sequential approach for teaching literacy in the early years. The scope and sequence is broken up into seven stages across the early years of schooling. Each stage has an explicit focus on phonemic awareness and phonics for spelling and reading, handwriting, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and morphology. This ensures that students have the skills necessary to read, write and spell with confidence and accuracy.

On Monday and Tuesday this week, Maria, Siobhan and I attended a 2-day workshop where we took a deep dive into Little Learners. We were introduced to the theory behind the program and the evidence base that supports systematic synthetic phonics, and we got to explore the explicit lesson structures, fun resources and engaging games.

We will be sharing more information on the roll-out of Little Learners over the course of the next few months, and will be holding an information session early next year. For now, if you would like more information check out their website here
