Reading at home

As we celebrate Book Week, it's a perfect time to reflect on the importance of reading to children. Reading is a cornerstone of learning and development, offering countless benefits that extend well into adolescence.

Reading to older children is equally as important as reading to younger children, and plays a significant role in brain development by stimulating cognitive functions and enhancing neural connections. Similar to the benefits for early years and junior primary children, reading to older children enhances vocabulary and comprehension, which are crucial for academic success.

Additionally, reading together fosters emotional literacy, helping children understand and express their emotions through diverse characters and situations. It encourages critical thinking and discussion, allowing exploration of different perspectives. Introducing challenging topics in a safe environment helps to promote empathy and understanding, enriching both educational journeys and personal development.
