Year 5 News

A Buzz of Activity in Year 5!

What a busy and productive few weeks it's been in Year 5! The energy has been incredible as we've dived into new topics and exciting experiences. We've been working hard and having a lot of fun and the students have truly shown what they're capable of.

Literacy

Storytellers and Super Readers

Our classroom has been a hub of creativity as students have been mastering the art of storytelling. We've focused on improving our reading comprehension and fluency daily, helping students to not only read the words on the page but also understand the stories behind them. The students have also put on their author hats, applying their skills to construct some truly fabulous narratives filled with imaginative characters and exciting plots.

Numeracy

All the Right Angles

In Numeracy, we have been getting to the point—the point of an angle, that is! The students have been exploring the fascinating world of angles, learning about everything from the sharp corners of an acute angle to the wide stretch of an obtuse angle. They have learned how to identify and classify right angles, reflex angles, and even a full revolution. The best part has been watching them confidently use a protractor to measure and draw angles with precision.

Unit of Inquiry

Influencers in the Making

Our Unit of Inquiry has had us thinking like entrepreneurs and trendsetters. We've continued our exploration of the power of influence, focusing on how trends begin and spread. The students put their newfound knowledge into action by working in groups to create a positive and inclusive pretend trend for our school community.

The highlight was when they became 'podcast hosts,' writing and performing their own podcasts to persuade and convince others to join their trend. It was wonderful to see them using their creativity and communication skills to promote something positive.

Incursions and Excursions

Fun and Learning

A Visit from Harold the Giraffe!

We had a fantastic time welcoming Harold the Giraffe from the Life Ed van. This incursion, titled 'Relate Respect Connect', was a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn and discuss vital skills for healthy relationships.

Through a variety of activities, we've been learning about how to be a respectful person and a good friend. We've also been investigating and practising strategies to resolve conflict both in person and online. Students have been developing their skills to:

  • Describe the qualities of a healthy and respectful relationship.

  • Find ways to make new friends and maintain existing relationships.

  • Practise respectfully resolving conflict online and offline.

  • Manage their own emotions and recognise them in others.

  • Define Respect, Resilience, and Empathy and understand why these are so important.

  • Make a commitment to positive behaviour change.

A Theatrical Treat!

Our next adventure was an excursion to see Beaumaris Secondary College's production of 'Puffs' by Matt Cox. It was a fantastic show, and our students were thoroughly entertained.

It was particularly special as many of our Year 5s have older siblings in the cast. We were all so impressed by the students' risk-taking and their talent. It was a great day out, and the students were incredibly well-behaved.

It's hard to believe we're already heading into the final few weeks of Term 3! We're looking forward to more fun and learning together.
