Discovering Learning Through the Eyes of a Year 2 Student
Our Year 2 students have been actively engaged in their current Unit of Inquiry, which focuses on the central idea: 'Living things go through a process of change.' This unit falls under the transdisciplinary theme “Sharing the planet,” where students explore how living things grow, develop, and adapt over time, deepening their understanding of life cycles and transformation.
At the heart of this learning experience is the development of the Learner Profile attributes, encouraging students to be inquirers and reflective thinkers as they observe and question the changes happening around them.
Our PYP leaders, Jack and Aiden interviewed Emily from 2B and Holly from 2C to find out what they have learned:
What is your central idea?
Holly- Living things go through a process of change.
What have you enjoyed the most?
Holly- Going to the museum to see the minibeasts. My favourite part was looking at the spiders.
What have you learnt during this unit?
Emily- We have learnt about life cycles. The life cycle of an insect is: Egg, Larva, Pupa then Adult. We have also learnt to label their body parts. All insects have a head, thorax and abdomen.
What have you found interesting in this unit?
Emily- That all insects have compound eyes. A compound eye is an eye that has many little eyes inside of them.
What learner profile do you think you have showed the most this unit?
Emily- I think I have been caring when learning how important it is to look after minibeasts, otherwise we wouldn’t have food such as honey and some fruits and vegetables.
Holly- I think I have been knowledgeable during this unit when learning about new and fascinating things.
